The UK government has announced it is suspending all Syrian asylum claims - just a day after the Assad dynasty was toppled in Syria.

There are around 30,000 Syrian nationals living in the UK, a relatively small amount compared with many European countries.

The government's decision to pause asylum claims followed the same decisions by Germany, which has taken in nearly a million Syrians fleeing the country's war, and other European countries including Greece, Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium.

The International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP), a UK-based rights group, announced on Monday that it had answered Albanese's call for evidence ahead of a report to the UN Human Rights Council on "how the private sector has contributed to establishing and maintain Israel’s presence" in the occupied territories.

The ICJP said its submission explains the case studies of four charities, including Trinity College Cambridge and the UK arm of the Jewish National Fund.

Middle East Eye revealed in February that the prestigious Cambridge college, which is one of Britain's wealthiest landowners, had $78,089 invested in Israel's largest arms company, Elbit Systems.

MEE also reported that Cambridge College had millions of dollars invested in other companies arming, supporting and profiting from Israel's war on Gaza.

Nov 21 (Reuters) - Northvolt, the Swedish maker of battery cells for electric vehicles, said on Thursday it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S., dealing a blow to Europe's hopes that its most developed battery player would reduce Western car makers' reliance on Chinese rivals.

Northvolt said it has only enough cash to support operations for about a week and said it has secured $100 million in new financing for the bankruptcy process. It said operations will continue as normal during the bankruptcy.

"Northvolt's liquidity picture has become dire," the company said in its Chapter 11 petition, filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston. The company, which has operations in California, has about $30 million of cash, which can support its operations for only about a week. It has $5.8 billion in debts.

Northvolt, which employs around 6,600 staff across seven countries, said it expects to complete the restructuring by the first quarter of 2025.

Carbon removal activities will have to meet four overarching criteria in order to be certified:

  • they must bring about a quantifiednet carbon removal benefit or net soil emission reduction benefit
  • they must be additional, meaning that they go beyond statutory requirements at the level of an individual operator and they need the incentive effect of the certification to become financially viable
  • they must aim to ensure long-term storage of carbon while minimising the risk of carbon release
  • they should do no significant harm to the environment and should be able to result in co-benefits to one or more sustainability goals

It is both sad and frightening at the same time to see that Germany has once again found an appetite for being an active part in a genocide of non-white peoples, by supporting the Zionist regime that perpetrates one of the worst genocides in modern history in Gaza, and that has also unleashed the same genocidal dynamics in the West Bank and Lebanon.

Yet, as Karl Marx once wrote: "History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce."

And so, we do not witness a German tragedy but one of the worst farces in German history. Pretending to protect Jewish life by declaring a racist ideology to be a guiding principle for Germany that cannot be criticised is an unparalleled farce against the background of Germany’s history.

It comes as no surprise that Germany has taken the racist, genocidal Zionist regime’s side. Yet contrary to the political parties’ talk of consternation over German guilt, this step has little if anything to do with the Nazi genocide of white European Jews.

Rather, it follows from deeply entrenched German arrogance and its mentality of white supremacism that is consistent with the idea that while the "West" epitomises "civilisation", the "Rest" stands for "barbarism".

Petition Summary: The petitioner calls for the European Union to actively develop and implement a Linux-based operating system, termed ‘EU-Linux’, across public administrations in all EU Member States. This initiative aims to reduce dependency on Microsoft products, ensuring compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and promoting transparency, sustainability, and digital sovereignty within the EU. The petitioner emphasizes the importance of using open-source alternatives to Microsoft 365, such as LibreOffice and Nextcloud, and suggests the adoption of the E/OS mobile operating system for government devices. The petitioner also highlights the potential for job creation in the IT sector through this initiative.
