Happened across this and thought it was interesting enough to share. As the title says, it was the first full length film done in Flash, and was entirely animated by one man, Phil Nibbelink, who previously worked as the director for Fievel goes West, and We're Back! A Dinosaur's story, as well as working as Directing Animator on Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

With a pedigree like that, you'd think this would be pretty kick ass, but it was largely ignored upon release, and got mostly panned by the few who did watch it. It apparently has a bit of a cult following now, but otherwise is fairly obscure.

It's an interesting piece of animation history, though I don't think I'll be joining the cult. While it's an incredible feat of animation for one person to have done, it's otherwise pretty mediocre, and his other two films, also animated solely by him, unfortunately suffer the same fate (though the animation quality improves).

Archive.org came through with another all-time favorite!

Where Eagles Dare was directed by Brian G. Hutton, and was based on the novel written by Alistair MacLean. The setup is a rescue mission; A brigadier general is being held captive and interrogated in a Bavarian mountaintop castle by the Nazis, and the SOE tasks Major John Smith (Richard Burton) with leading a team of commandos to bust him out.

Where do I even begin with this film? It has everything you'd want in a WWII spy thriller; the slowly building suspense is absolutely masterful, not a single actor was miscast and everyone put in a damn good performance, the locations, the way the plot unfolds, Gah! I can't say enough good about it.

It was filmed on location in Austria and Bavaria, which results in some really lovely authentic shots of snow covered peaks and towns. The cinematography is workmanlike, perfectly capturing the important bits but never lingering for an artistic shot, which serves the movie well.

The first time I saw it, I was surprised how relatively strong the women characters in it are, an uncommon sight for that period.

For the 60's, this is just a god dang masterpiece, right up there with The Great Escape, and IMHO is one of the finest WWII films ever made. A slow burn with an incredibly satisfying finish. Give it a shot, you won't regret it!

Per Wikipedia:

Killer Force, also known as The Diamond Mercenaries, is a 1976 thriller film directed by Val Guest and starring Telly Savalas, Peter Fonda and Christopher Lee. It was a co-production between the Republic of Ireland, Switzerland, United Kingdom (post production at Twickenham), and the United States and was filmed primarily in Namibia (at the time of filming part of South Africa). Its plot is about a gang of criminals who plan a major robbery of a diamond mine.

Val Guest called it "a very tough picture to make."

This is a pure cheese b-movie with all the drippings of the 70's, and an odd cast to say the least. It was fun to see Christopher Lee in a commando-like role though.

There's nothing remarkable about this film, but if you like low budget movies to chuckle at, it may be worth a try.

A Trip to the Moon (French: Le voyage dans la lune) is a 1902 French science-fiction adventure trick film written, directed and produced by Georges Méliès. Inspired by Jules Verne's 1865 novel From the Earth to the Moon and its 1870 sequel Around the Moon, the film follows a group of astronomers who travel to the Moon in a cannon-propelled capsule, explore the Moon's surface, escape from an underground group of Selenites (lunar inhabitants), and return to Earth with a captive Selenite. Méliès leads an ensemble cast of French theatrical performers as the main character Professor Barbenfouillis.

This was an eerie one to watch due to how accurately it depicts our future over 60 years ago, if for a different reason.

Directed by Val Guest, this is a classic grounded hard sci-fi, like something you'd read out of an Analog Magazine of the era. The dialog is surprisingly snappy and well written, and the special effects are quite well done, if used sparingly. The acting is pretty damn solid as well. It's filmed in a fairly unique style in the way it flows, and while a slow burn with little action, I found the writing and concept compelling.

The story centers around a down-and-out British journalist for the Daily Express, Peter Stenning. Struggling to finish a story and constantly being bailed out by his friend, a new lead on strange happenings by the US and USSR sets him on the path to be able to write the story of a lifetime, certainly front page material, at least.

This was a labor of love by the director, who had to beg and plead to multiple studios before one finally gave him a modest budget to get it made, and I think he did a pretty fantastic job. Rotten Tomatoes seems to agree, as it received a rating of 86% there.

This film covers a pretty broad set of themes, including:

  • News Media
  • Social Class
  • Gender Politics (for the 60's, anyway)
  • And a couple other things that would spoil the story :)

If that sounds interesting, I highly recommend it. I came away from it being pretty darn satisfied and impressed.

I'm so damn pleased to have found this on archive. Three Days of The Condor is one of my absolute favorite movies ever.

Condor was originally going to be more of a generic spy film to generate some cash for the director, Sydney Pollack. But after the Watergate scandal, the general mood of the country shifted toward mistrust in government, so they tweaked the screenplay to make it a far more serious film with a message, which resulted in one of the finest thrillers of the 70's.

The acting by everyone involved is superb, the casting excellent, and the story excellently told. If I had to compare it to anything, it really feels like a 1970's prequel to the Bourne Conspiracy.

The story focuses on Joe Turner, a bookish CIA analyst codenamed "Condor" who works at the American Literary Historical Society in New York City, which is actually a clandestine CIA office. The staff members examine books, newspapers, and magazines from around the world to compare them to actual operations or to mine ideas, and things take off from there.

This is, in my opinion, the best movie I've yet posted to thus community, so if you're lookin' for something to watch tonight, I highly recommend grabbing some snacks and getting stuck in! :)

A fictionalized account of a true story, it centers on the controversial 60 Minutes segment about Jeffrey Wigand, a whistleblower in the tobacco industry,[3] covering his and CBS producer Lowell Bergman's struggles as they defend his testimony against efforts to discredit and suppress it by CBS and Wigand's former employer.

Though not a box office success, The Insider received acclaim from critics, who praised Crowe's portrayal of Wigand and Mann's direction. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role (for Russell Crowe).

There are a couple of cuss words blanked out the in the first couple minutes, but whoever was doing that got bored and quit doing it after a while. Also, the youtube comments say some of the violence was edited down.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is a 1969 British drama film directed by Ronald Neame from a screenplay written by Jay Presson Allen, adapted from her own stage play, which was in turn based on the 1961 novel of the same name by Muriel Spark. The film stars Maggie Smith in the title role as an unrestrained teacher at a girls' school in Edinburgh.

I think this might have region-blocking, but I'm not sure of the regions.

Thief is a truly fantastic film, and in my opinion was Michael Mann at his best, full of incredible moody shots in a rain soaked Chicago.

It's incredibly grounded and gritty for the 80's, and easily could've been a modern Netflix special. The music was done by Tangerine Dream, which is always a treat (though apparently Michael Mann later questioned his decision to use them!).

All of the cops in the film are actually real life convicted thieves, who advised the film on the techniques used. The breaking and entering was done by the actual actors after being coached by the real thieves, which gives it a ton of authenticity.

The actors do a fantastic job (real life thieves included!) and the story is tight and well told. Bit of a slow burn, but absolutely worth it.
