Saw an interesting conversation today on how we view Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest III as landmark titles of the genre even decades later.

Do you think these will remain classics down the line? Are there other current games you think will endure? Maybe the genre will look even more like mobile gaming? Or stay the same?

Not much here, but maybe a good sign we'll finally hear some announcements (even if it's not these games) from SQEX at/after the upcoming Nintendo Direct in April.

Forgotten Compositions: How Yuzo Koshiro Relived a Childhood Memory with 'Terranigma'

Recently, the legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro made an interesting announcement on social media, sharing how he had composed music for Terranigma, but only now remembered it after 28 years.

Today marks the 28th anniversary of Terranigma, and I’ve just remembered that I composed the theme for Beruga’s Laboratory!

Koshiro's statement is a reminder that prolific game music composers sometimes can't recall their older works due to the sheer volume of projects they've been involved with throughout their careers. Terranigma stands out as it was only released in Japan and PAL territories, which has made the game a rare gem for collectors and enthusiasts.

Interestingly, Koshiro is currently hard at work on Earthion, an upcoming Mega Drive/Genesis action shooter.

What's your favourite music track from Koshiro?

I'm probably about an hour into Ni no Kuni, which I bought on sale years back on steam, but so far I feel a bit underwhelmed compared to the hype.

I will say that my biggest complaint is really around the writing and the snails paced intro. Even if you accept the beginning as being a "Ghibli Movie" preface to a JRPG, I actually feel the direction and story telling is much worse than your average Ghibli production.

I'm just past talking to the old tree, and completed what is likely the first dungeon. So far, the battle system is ok but a little bit drab. I feel like the mechanics would have to pick up to make me enjoy the game more.

Should I give it more time? Are there eventually more choices in the battle system or minion growth? Will there be any stand out characters that might alter how I feel about the writing?

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will be release on 24th April 2025 for XBS, PC (Steam, Epic) and PS5.

They showed the game, it's story, battle system and a lot more in the Xbox Direct for about 20 minutes. If you are interrested in more check out the Direct, i would recommend it: Xbox Direct with Timecode

I started playing Disgaea 1 for my Discord server's game of the month. I bounced off of this game all the way back at release. Now, I've given it a fair shake and it's already feeling like another one of those I would actually have liked back in the day. My experience with this genre is still pretty limited; I've played Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre: LUCT along with a couple of the newer Fire Emblem games.

What do you think are the must-play strategy JRPGs?

Out of this year's releases that I played, I enjoyed Metaphor: ReFantazio the most.

I also picked up Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Lost Odyssey this year and really liked those.

What were your favorites this year?
