Israel and Palestine Politics Discussion

399 readers

The sole purpose of this community is to discuss Israeli and Palestinian issues. It is not the place for hurling insults, rehashing grudges, or making up history. Any conversation that veers into the "if only your people had" realm will be deleted or locked right away. I started this community in the potentially fruitless hope that we may have a civil conversation about this issue.

Rules:

  1. References to historical events must include a reputable source. The definition of reputable is up to the mods. Keep that in mind.
  2. Articles from reputable sources only.
  3. No name-calling. That's what DMs are for. /s
  4. Keep it in English. If I don't understand the word, it gets removed. Obvious exceptions would be the use of proper names and references. For example, "wadi" when used to refer to a place is acceptable.
  5. Discussions that are heading into the probability of becoming a flame war will be locked.
  6. Repeat offenders will be forced to find another community.
  7. Anti-Zionism is ok. Anti-Semitism is not.
  8. Whataboutism is for toddlers. Try to grow up.
  9. Posting articles about current events is encouraged. Posting the same story from 20 different sources is not.
  10. Posting an article purely for the purpose of saying "Look what monsters they are" is discouraged unless it can generate an honest discussion. This is probably the most difficult rule to follow.
  11. No calling anyone a terrorist.
  12. No YouTube links. Some of us can read.

I would be interested in hearing your arguments against this.

There cannot be an external force that acts out of benevolence to solve the issue. Every intervention has always aimed to establish dominance over the region. The US are trying it, and the British had tried it before them.

The way you phrased your comment infantilizes the belligerents and serves to justify external, military intervention and subjugation by a supposedly "civilized" and "enlightened" nation, like what happened in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria and other places.

The US are trying it

No they fucking aren't

There have been US attempts to do things in the Mideast that at least partially were genuine attempts to do good things. Usually they don't turn out as anything good, because of massive structural issues both in the US armed forces and in the Mideast, so you could make the argument that we just shouldn't do anything ever. Which it seems like you're doing.

Our current type of involvement in the Israel / Palestine conflict is nothing resembling a benevolent attempt.

IDK why you assumed by "a separate military force" you assumed I meant US forces. I sort of agree with you that US military intervention would be unlikely to accomplish anything good (both because of the history and the low trust level they would receive, and because of the structural issues inherent in their priorities and behavior that have led to that low trust level).

IDK what form some kind of outside intervention could realistically take (I mean, aside from Iran deciding to blow up all Israel's cities and everyone gets to see what happens next, that's realistic on some level), but I wasn't saying US.

I'm not saying it is actually benevolent per se, but that it is perceived or painted as such when in fact it is the complete opposite. There's not much to disagree with, but I want you to be wary of what external intervention signifies most of the times in an imperialist global order.
