If you want to learn about a nation’s politics, go to the international news coverage of that nation. If you want to learn about a nation’s level of violence, check their local news.

Victorian here, i see our african gangs are on the move

[–] Nbard@aussie.zone 9 points 1 week ago

Looks like that flew over someone's head.

(Sky news and a right wing politician infamously tried to claim that African gangs were rampaging through victoria and people were afraid to go out at night. This was, shockingly, a lie.)

Australian media has fallen.

It is very interesting to compare Sky News in the UK vs Australia.

Sky News UK is a relatively normal news channel. That is because UK broadcasting is governed by codes of conduct and Ofcom (the governing body) can reprimand, heavily fine or shut down channels which violate its rules. The rules require fairness, impartiality, the right of reply and other safeguards in news reporting.

Sky News Australian is rabidly far right channel that exaggerates and lies about everything. It punches down on minorities because of religion, ethnicity, sexuality or any other reason and does so with impunity. It is not required to be fair or impartial and never is. That is because Australia has no similar code of conduct.

So the issue here is Australia needs to get its broadcasting rules sorted out.

Nobody worth talking to takes Sky News seriously.

Several members of parliament do, but I digress.

I'm in Finland. Over here every summer there's always some streets that are being repaved or major public service buildings that gets closed due to "renovations". Ha, I know that's just a government cover-up. They don't want us to know about the looting gangs who apparently have access to stealth technology!

I figured this would be about the summer temperatures finally arriving. Moved to Germany from San Diego years ago and it’s comedy to watch them panic once it hits 85f. Parks empty, streets empty (save for ice cream stands, which practically print their own money). Germany, steadfastly refusing to acknowledge air conditioners have existed for 7 decades.

It’s as if… wait for it… they are made of sugar!

No, we're only made out of sugar when it rains
