The federal government plans to spend $1.26 billion to build the country's largest immigration detention center at Fort Bliss, an army base in El Paso, according to a recently-announced contract.

The U.S. Department of Defense on Monday announced that Virginia-based company Acquisition Logistics LLC was given nearly $232 million up front to build and run the 5,000-bed tent camp. The federal agency said the facility is expected to open by September 2027.

The contract is one of the biggest for Acquisition Logistics, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the contract. But the company does not appear to have experience running detention centers.

Using tents in the sprawling West Texas to detain migrants has been a long-time concern for immigrant rights activists because of scorching desert heat.

$46 400 per bed to build this camp. The motivations are clearly not to benefit the average taxpayer. They’ll gleefully spend hundreds of millions to treat humans like garbage.

46400 to build a tent camp…

What are they spending the money on?

[–] SpermHowitzer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Maybe we’re all being so pessimistic. Maybe all that money is going towards proper climate control and plumbing, proper kitchen facilities, and proper hygiene facilities. Maybe they learned from Alligator Auschwitz, right? …right?

Pfffft. Regular TX prisons dont have that stuff.

Concentration camp #2

[–] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

If the plan is to deport everyone who is here illegally and not let anymore in, why do we need these huge camps to keep people in?....

Who are the camps for exactly?

[–] queueBenSis@sh.itjust.works 43 points 4 days ago (1 children)

let’s all just start calling these what they are: concentration camps.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago

I AM calling them that!

[–] crystalmerchant@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

But no money for food stamps

[–] Glifted@lemmy.world 22 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I give it 2 years before we start finding mass graves

[–] womjunru@lemmy.cafe 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Sweetie, that’s what burning them is for. Whatever the Nazis did is what Trump will do.

The vast majority of people killed in the holocaust were buried in mass Graves. Even today, disposing of millions of bodies would require impossible amounts of fuel. Let alone for a country in the late-30s and 40s that was essentially economically isolated then at war.

Additionally, Fascist and capitalist are the laziest people on earth. Rest assured, if/when the mass murders fully begin, our bodies are going in hole somewhere.

Cruelty and sex trafficking camp. They are spending billions of dollars to imprison taxpaying people who mostly just committed a misdemeanor of being in the country undocumented. They are not the efficient government they say they are, they just have vastly different priorities of what to spend taxpayer money on.

No services for taxpayers, cruelty for immigrants.

[–] Pieisawesome@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

Misdemeanor for being in the country undocumented is a new concept. Before (if I remember correctly) Reagan, it was a civil matter.

It should have remained a civil matter

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 14 points 4 days ago

I thought, "That's a misnomer," then realized how many would enjoy the thought of others suffering, there.

How many illegal are there ? 1.2b for 5000 places ?

[–] Pieisawesome@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Don’t call people “illegals”. They are people, it’s dehumanizing.

[–] bigmamoth@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Illegals residents Happy ?

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not half as many as the administration wants you to think, that's why they've been snatching pretty much any immigrants they think they can get away with. The media messaging is trying to conflate immigration with undocumented immigration very deliberately.

[–] bigmamoth@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

That s a good point but you can t remove remove documented immigrant aka legal one or did they changed law about that ?

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 1 points 59 minutes ago

You can absolutely deport legal immigrants. The admin has done it hundreds of times already. Normally this is only if you violate your visa terms or whatever, but it turns out the law only works if people actually enforce it. Trump is Andrew Jackson 2.0 - "sure the courts told me I can't do it. I'm gonna do it anyway, and who the hell is gonna stop me".

[–] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I am one million percent sure you have done something illegal in your life.

I assume that makes you illegal. They will be sending the masked men to pick you up soon.

[–] bigmamoth@lemmy.world -2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If I'm entering without permition on another one property I won't be surprised if I get remove at some point.

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

“Permition”

“If I get remove”

You muppets really ARE just simple trash, aren’t you? Please, keep typing, though- it’s good for people to be aware of the level of intellect that accompanies the Nazi worldview
