I wouldn't call anyone trying to make other people happy "dead inside".

You can totally feel dead inside and also compulsively try to cheer people up.

The depressed comic is a common thing. I guess it's like an overcompensation thing sometimes, but sometimes it's also a compulsive people pleaser thing.

Believe it or not this is a lot of depressed people, I can also speak from personal experience.
