Hello, everyone! I wanted to share my experience of successfully running LLaMA on an Android device. The model that performed the best for me was llama3.2:1b on a mid-range phone with around 8 GB of RAM. I was also able to get it up and running on a lower-end phone with 4 GB RAM. However, I also tested several other models that worked quite well, including qwen2.5:0.5b , qwen2.5:1.5b , qwen2.5:3b , smallthinker , tinyllama , deepseek-r1:1.5b , and gemma2:2b. I hope this helps anyone looking to experiment with these models on mobile devices!

Step 1: Install Termux

  1. Download and install Termux from the Google Play Store or F-Droid

Step 2: Set Up proot-distro and Install Debian

  1. Open Termux and update the package list:

    pkg update && pkg upgrade

  2. Install proot-distro

    pkg install proot-distro

  3. Install Debian using proot-distro:

    proot-distro install debian

  4. Log in to the Debian environment:

    proot-distro login debian

You will need to log-in every time you want to run Ollama. You will need to repeat this step and all the steps below every time you want to run a model (excluding step 3 and the first half of step 4).

Step 3: Install Dependencies

  1. Update the package list in Debian:

    apt update && apt upgrade

  2. Install curl:

    apt install curl

Step 4: Install Ollama

  1. Run the following command to download and install Ollama:

    curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh

  2. Start the Ollama server:

    ollama serve &

After you run this command, do ctrl + c and the server will continue to run in the background.

Step 5: Download and run the Llama3.2:1B Model

  1. Use the following command to download the Llama3.2:1B model:
    ollama run llama3.2:1b

This step fetches and runs the lightweight 1-billion-parameter version of the Llama 3.2 model .

Running LLaMA and other similar models on Android devices is definitely achievable, even with mid-range hardware. The performance varies depending on the model size and your device's specifications, but with some experimentation, you can find a setup that works well for your needs. Iโ€™ll make sure to keep this post updated if there are any new developments or additional tips that could help improve the experience. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to share them below!

From a practical standpoint, the country that hosts many digital services is undergoing rapid political change. For awareness of non-US alternatives, check out:

TODOmd v2.0 release (codeberg.org)
submitted 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) by lig@lemmings.world to c/opensource@lemmy.ml

TODOmd is a pre-commit hook that maintains a TODO.md file in your repo keeping it up to date with all TODOs in your code.

In version 2.0 TODOmd has been completely rewritten in Go. This release introduces a 5x speedup on average and multiplatform availability.

- Im looking for a chat app that I can use with others mid flight. Ideally id be able to send them the apk to install while in flightmode (with Bluetooth) - Yes we are too cheap to pay for seats together. But in our defence we fly alot.

Just learned about the FUTO keyboard. The source code license, the AI features and the requiremen to activate my microphone, made my BS/malware alarm go bzzz. So I looked up FUTO, and apparently it is an organization similar to FSF (but different).

So what is this FUTO thing? Are they good and trustworthy? Or is this just some new drug fueled eccentric crypto AI BS from Texas?

Is it "safe" to use the FUTO keyboard?

EDIT: Thanks, guys! I ended up downloading Heliboard from f-droid :)

Article: https://proton.me/blog/deepseek

Calls it "Deepsneak", failing to make it clear that the reason people love Deepseek is that you can download and it run it securely on any of your own private devices or servers - unlike most of the competing SOTA AIs.

I can't speak for Proton, but the last couple weeks are showing some very clear biases coming out.

I was using paisa-app for over an year now, I had access source code in the github. But suddenly one day the source code vasnishes and the app is no longer present in f-driod and only in play store.

Plus now there are pro-freatures with subscription fees and thats the same thing for Cashew.

Am I missing something or these apps are no longer open-source?

Thank you for all the replies in advance.

The GNU C Library version 2.41 is now available.

The GNU C Library is used as the C library in the GNU system and in GNU/Linux systems, as well as many other systems that use Linux as the kernel.

The GNU C Library is primarily designed to be a portable and high performance C library. It follows all relevant standards including ISO C23 and POSIX.1-2024. It is also internationalized and has one of the most complete internationalization interfaces known.

I'm interested in using Vespucci app to help contribute to OpenStreetMap but I do not have cell service, I don't have data or GPS, it's wi-fi only so no working GPS.

I can't figure out how to use Vespucci with a offline phone when outside.

Neostumbler has has a huge update! Better maps, higher scan interval, customizability!

It is an app to contribute to open geolocation through wifi, cell towers or bluetooth beacons. This is faster, energy efficient, resilient and can be fully anonymous.

The database is beacondb.net and can already be used!

Hi, I was wondering which FOSS options have you used for online surveys and how was your experience using them, which ones would you recommend?

A Nextbike client without Google Play service dependencies.

The only feature from the normal app that is not available is the booking via the map (no Google Maps, bikes must be booked via QR code) and thus the reservation function.

The rest works without any problems.

Open TV is an ultra fast IPTV player for Linux, MacOS and Windows.

Since the last time I posted here, Open TV has changed a lot. I took all the feedback from lemmy, github and hackernews and worked very hard on the last few months to deliver the best IPTV experience on desktop. Here's all the cool new stuff:

  • EPG and EPG Notifications (TV guide)
  • Download vods and movies
  • Re-stream channels to allow multiple devices/people to watch from a single iptv subscription
  • Optional keyword search
  • Editable sources in Settings
  • Option to refresh sources on start in Settings
  • Custom sources, channels and groups you can share and import with the .otv, .otvg and .otvp formats
  • Support for custom http headers in m3u
  • Much more robust m3u processing
  • Vastly improved error handling and reporting with both in-app error messages and logging
  • More settings added like default volume and default view
  • Scroll to load more
  • Improved hotkeys and UI/UX
  • A ton of bug fixes
  • The app was added to scoop (scoop.sh)!

Open TV is a solo open source project. If you enjoy using the app, feedback and bug reports are super appreciated. Donations are also very welcome and always appreciated, no matter the amount.

Nuxt, Flohmarkt & Open Banking Gateway will work on integrations with Taler, the privacy-preserving digital payment system. And NGI Fediversity - the effort to create a hosting stack in-a-box - will be joined by Drupal & Source-based Nextcloud + Onlyoffice."

Hi everybody. I have a rooted phone and I was thinking, If I can spin up something like Samsung DEX on my phone, alongside my android, that uses Linux, I can do 80% of my work just with my phone. Is that doable? Can someone provide me with more information?

Hello,

Does anyone know of a FOSS CCTV design software as an alternative to JVSG or CCTVCad?

Thanks

I'm creating a JavaScript UI framework for my own projects. It's a learning journey and I'd like to share my progress.

I've written some blog posts about my progress so far:

  1. Functional Web Components - https://positive-intentions.com/blog/dim-functional-webcomponents
  2. Functional Todo App - https://positive-intentions.com/blog/dim-todo-list
  3. Async State Management - https://positive-intentions.com/blog/async-state-management
  4. Bottom-up Browser Storage - https://positive-intentions.com/blog/bottom-up-storage

Note: The UI framework is far from finished. I want to share progress to see if there are any outstanding issues I'm overlooking.

Hi, I have recently found this as an alternative to the great RCX which has been outdated for quite a long time now. RSAF has been updated a few days ago to use the latest version of rclone, 1.69.0. I am just leaving this here in case someone doesn't know about it.
