I suggest everyone watch the classic I am Legend... no not with will smith, but Vincent Price! It was early concept zombies, they could talk.

As far as I'm aware, originally it was a horror-themed critique of mindless consumerism (which is why malls are the most common backdrop). Could be wrong, but that's what I remember reading.

I've also heard this, but I can't find the source. Something about the horror of being the only sane people left in an insane world, and slowly watching the ones you love fall to the other side.
