/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

MODERATORS

Hi. Normally , I enjoy the original (or at least lesser-known) memes on here.

Lately however, I’ve noticed that despite the anti-repost rule on here, way too many posts recently have been reposts; many of them very well might literally appear in the first results of an image search for “[insert series] memes”.

Personally, I feel that the purpose of any Trek meme community should primarily be to explore strange new memes; while occasionally reposts commemorating seasonal events (as well as the occasional tastefully-timed time loop meme) are acceptable, I think they should never dominate this community. I am hoping we can reduce that frequency and return to our primary mission.

Thank you for your time in listening to my concerns. Glory to you and your house.

Most of the limitations arise from using Lemmy, which is quite a bit behind other platforms. Obligatory fuck spez, but Reddit was a fully featured UI while Lemmy lacks most things that Reddit has, like post (+ user) flairs, which this community could otherwise apply, e.g. to distinguish OC from e.g. reposts here from Risa or elsewhere. A lot of this relates to the choice of Rust as the programming language, which barely anyone knows, even full and senior C++ developers, and the language itself is not finished unlike C++.

Ironically PieFed has both of those features, but it lacks others like a post & comment preview, and most people interact with the Threadiverse via Lemmy rather than the tiny and very new PieFed. Perhaps as official support is added to the Thunder app that will change (full support is already available in Interstellar, though last I tried it out is a bit of a hack, so alpha version).

Admiral Patrick's Tesseract likewise has flairs too... which again doesn't really help as most people neither use nor even know that they could use them. Edit: example post with two flairs on it.

Thus the choice falls to have content or do not have content. Votes tend to take care of that: if you do not like something, then do not upvote it. Maybe if certain users (maybe me?) post things that you do not want to see, you can block them and don't have to see it anymore. Though I for one very much enjoy the spirit of fun that I see daily in this community:-). I don't think I've ever downvoted literally anything in it.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but it bears noting that Reddit 's search was so bad, entire second tier search websites exist.

Yikes, true dat. PieFed's search is also pretty bad, and tbh, Lemmy's is amazing and about to get better iirc by being able to restrict a search to only look at post titles. This is definitely an example of something that Lemmy does really super well.

Also, fuck spez!

Maybe a dozen times, maybe a hundred, it's impossible to say how many are necessary. 🤪

Fuck Spez. For good measures.

I wanna use this meme to make a joke about fuck spez (edit: and the interrelationship between Reddit and Lemmy):

But the level of meta collapsed in upon itself and created a singularity, and now I'm too tired and going to go to bed.

Btw, fuck spez. 😁
