A cute little Suillus bovinus (probably) grew with my COVID-time seed planted tree

Yeah you can use the benefits of mycorrhiza for keeping the tree healthy but what I meant is using it as a way to grow mushrooms at home that you couldn't otherwise. Sacrificing a bonsai each time probably wouldn't be quite worth the effort though ๐Ÿ˜… Maybe there's a way to keep a detached root alive long enough for the mycelium to prey on it and fruit some shrooms. Sounds like a fun project at least.

Actually I've seen scientific papers that did just that - hydroponically kept a root alive until full colonization. I wouldn't attempt that, I have plenty of actual living forest to mess with this extremely complicated system in a jar, knowing it is possible feels enough, pushing it further is not worth the effort. At least now.
