In some places making a personal copy of media is allowed as long as the media is acquired in a legal way.

Lending a dvd from the library is a legal way to acquire media for a short duration of time.

Put the results in jellyfin and enjoy your own personal Netflix where content is reliable and chosen by you.

Watch from outside home using a vpn.

One thing to note is that dvds are lower resolution than most people are used to now, that said, local storage is the way 100% even at lower resolutions.

My local library has Bluray as well.

Its surprisingly good actually. Modern video streaming uses all kinds of compression techniques so the advertised resolution is mostly just advertising.

They also still make dvds of modern stuff.

Dvd on a dvd player plays great, you are correct. Ripped dvds are like native 480p regardless of your settings (unless upscaled) because that is the native resolution on the disc. Modern dvd players upscale on playback afaik.
