Bought a sensecap T1000 E and I can see nodes, receive messages, but all messages I send end up looking undelivered with a Max Retransmission Reached notice. What does it mean?

That's what I did. Just make sure that other node is placed well so it can reach another node.

With the second device I was able to send messages to my city network more reliably, but I still have iaaues when communicating on a private channel with a friend on the other side of the city, even when that friend is theoretically in reach of me in regards to hops.

It was always my plan to have a solar powered node with a decent antenna on the house and acting as a central node , and then maybe personal nodes like the T1000E for each person. It is quite expensive, though, especially given the battery life.
