Can uh, someone explain?
Passive sonar just listens, active sonar sends a ping and listens for a return. To get good range that ping is very loud, loud enough to blow out ears drums and then the squishy solids in your head into squishy liquids rapidly escaping your head. We could get into the lung exploding aspects but I'll just say, known sonar pings exceed 235db and ≈200 underwater can kill by lung overpressure.
Sonar lets out a loud noise, the cinematic 'ping', to detect objects.
Military sonar is incredibly powerful so it can detect things from miles away.
If you are right next to a submarine turning active sonar on, the force and vibration is so massive that your internal organs end up basically liquified.
... it's not great for sealife.
