And that’s why I recommend „following” feed with „for you page” used mostly for discovery (which is way ahead of everyone else, YouTube, Instagram or Peertube).
I didn’t give unnecessary permissions to the app. They can watch how I behave which is fine. It’s a commercial enterprise that has to make money to be able to afford streaming videos at this scale.
All ads I see are skippable.
You go ahead and convince normies to move to some obscure platform while I enjoy life.
You are still training their algorithm and Ai. The “for you page” is purely based off your data and optimized to hide their slop inside a package that was tailored to appeal to you. That’s fucked up.
Fuck off with that shit. That is absolutely not fine and tells me you have no idea about privacy or how much data they are extracting from invading your life.
All ads are unacceptable. Especially targeted ads. You should look into how ad space bidding works.

I’m the end user of that algorithm, I don’t mind that they’re training it on my behaviour because they do it better than others. Everyone can see my behaviour on Lemmy and train their sexbots on that too.
I’d pay for something like YouTube Premium but given that that’s not an option and streaming video is kinda expensive I’m okay with flicking ads away. I still want to engage with society I live in so I use things other people use, and generally there are ads there. I don’t care that companies buying ads get scammed because why would I?

Tell me you don’t understand consent without telling me that you don’t understand it. The content you willingly post to Lemmy/piefed is public. The data harvesting that platforms like TikTok and Facebook isn’t consensual, let alone ethical or needed to run these platforms.
What don’t you get, they are part of the scam. You are the target. You are the one getting fleeced and whored out for targeted ads.
I’m not on other platforms discussing this. This conversation is on piefed. A decentralized network with no ads and no corporate rulers. People here should be smart enough to get it.
I’m fairly sure I’m not the intended target because I don’t watch ads. When they come up they are clearly labeled and skippable without any delay, similar to any other video you watch there. Currently most of the ads I’m shown are laughably bad scams pretending to be TikTok. Not really an issue for me since I’m not a boomer or GenZ.
I’m giving my consent for creation of sex bots based on my behaviour freely. Both to Piefed and TikTok. I do not consent to creating sex bots based on my Lemmy activity but it’s entirely beyond my control unfortunately.
Again, why would I care? Usually after whoring around it’s my gaping anus that hurts but this seems fairly painless.

You’re prompted to give permission to those. You can refuse. For a time TikTok tried their best to ask me for it annoyingly often but it hasn’t for years now. Voyager doesn’t collect anything but almost everything you do through it is public for anyone to use.

If you have the app installed they don’t need that permission. Facebook and co has long since developed ways to bypass that shit. These apps are essentially spyware.

What I shared with TikTok is worthless compared to what I gave away using ActivityPub and that includes ability to profile me, cross-reference with other identities going back years. On TikTok I’m registered with a throwaway email that can be pinned to my location and behaviour at best.
You underestimate people using things in unintended ways. So does most of big tech too, hence I get to be weirdo on TikTok too.
You have no concept of how shafted you are getting accepting the kind of privacy invasion and harvesting going on if all you are wanting is a brain rotting feed of poorly cropped and recycled content designed to maximize engagement while pushing any agenda the owners want.

You also could have used throwaway emails or aliases with decentralized platforms as well… which should be standard practice nowadays anyways. Like using a strong password that’s not some relatives birth date.
What you think you shared and what was harvested are two very very different things and I don’t think you’ll understand or accept that it’s not worth these kinds of security and privacy concerns just to scroll and let an algorithm dumb you down, harvest your data and propagandize you.
