You're thinking about it too much.
The joke refers to the Republican's hate for progressives and their ideals (equality for all, women's rights, basic human decency, etc), which they refer to with the umbrella term "woke".
So the joke is, they hate "woke" people, both in the political and literal sense of someone waking from a coma.
Yeh I know, I thought I’d make another joke about the coma people being a minority. Yes it did diverge from the original joke and it obviously didn’t go down too well, tough crowd. Plus as someone else pointed out apparently republicans actually don’t like coma people for real so the joke became even more awkward. I’m just going to keep my mouth shut and my head down from now on. I’ll dim the light and stand in the corner so I’m out of the way. Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate your time
