I replaced mine with "sourcing map 2.5mm Ceramic Bearing Balls, ZrO2 Zirconium Oxide Ball G5 Precision". The difference is night and day.

I don't have much experience with other trackballs. I had a thumb control one from Logitech, which needed cleaning about as often. A small price to pay for pointing perfection, though.
