I once made a "your mom" quip to a friend like less than a month after their mom very suddenly passed away.
Can't really put into words how I felt the moment that came out of my mouth.
This is like the mountain biking principle, but in your subconscious regarding conversation.
In mountain biking, it's said that if you want to avoid a rock, don't look at it. Look where you want to go.
If you look at the rock, you are much more.likely to subconsciously steer the bike right into it.
Your mind probably knew about it, and was trying not to bring it up. But therefore you were thinking about it a lot, and what comes up? A mom joke.
Honestly, I think you're completely right. And just as bad of a crash, too.

I've been in the "receiving" position when I was a teenager, just couple days after mum died. Man that hurt, but I'm happy to know the guy died in a car accident before turning 18
I should mention that it was 1000% an accident on my part.
I should also mention that that's a really dark way to view a human life. Even if they had said it to be cruel, they were clearly young enough that they could've turned a new leaf.
