This is it. I have to close up shop providing mentorship for #cybersecurity careers. My final available sessions are posted. I will not be able to provide the service in Australia due to visa and time. https://calendly.com/lesleycarhart/
My apologies, and love to all the students I’ve seen over ten years.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange This is a huge loss to the community. I'm glad you are able to do what you have to do to be safe, but I'm sorry you have to do it.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange What's in your visa to prevent you from doing that? That seems like an odd limit.

@T2R I can’t do anything that will be perceived as work outside the work I do directly for my employer. It could absolutely wreck my immigration status.

Will I mentor people locally and run clinics there? Absolutely. But people tip me for this and it could be seen as a visa violation.

@T2R@infosec.exchange @hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange tipping isn’t a big thing here anyway… shouting someone an alcoholic bevvy as a thank you on the other hand :)

@SomeGen@infosec.exchange @T2R@infosec.exchange it was more the bevvy thing but immigration could read it wrong.

I am doing everything humanly possible to be able to resume these services in the future. Please be patient with me.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange Please remember to put your own mask on before attempting to help others.

@hacks4pancakes ((((hugs)))) 🧸

I’m amazed by how relentless you are in caring for & supporting others (I was going to say “tireless” but I’m sure you’re tired all.the.time 😩)

I hope you’re able to top up your own energy resources & practice self-care 💕 (let me know if I can help from very-afar-but-soon-not-quite-so-afar)

I expect to be booked completely within the hour.

And I’m booked. Thank you to everyone who came to see me and shared their successes with me over the years.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange I had my kid book one of the last two spots you had in April. Thanks for all you’ve done.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange even if there werent any issues with performing this service after your move, i think “im moving countries “ would be a perfectly reasonable explanation for why you wont be able to do it for a while!

[–] hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

@leadegroot@bne.social I … the reason I have asked for like optional $10 is that people don’t value my time otherwise. They don’t show up, or show up late.

[–] bob_zim@infosec.exchange 1 points 3 days ago

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange @leadegroot@bne.social Maybe do it in exchange for evidence of a $10 donation to a particular charity? As long as you don’t try to claim a tax deduction for donating your time to the charity, it would be hard to construe that as a visa violation.

Just a thought.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange ive found the same thing :(

@leadegroot@bne.social so I’ll look at doing it again when I’m settled but we will see how bad I get abused when there’s no money attached…

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange put you own mask on before assisting others.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange You've done so much for so many here. Don't feel guilty about having to pause to get yourself to safety.

I wish this was something where I could offer to help. But I feel like your experience is something that is hard to replace for people looking for guidance.

Its another place where this country is poorer for the experience and expertise its pushed away.

[–] hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social I'm already getting shit for it, and .... oh my god...

[–] rmd1023@infosec.exchange 1 points 3 days ago

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange @mikey@friendsofdesoto.social Oh for fuck’s sake. Do not set yourself on fire to keep other people warm. I support self care as a radical act.

[–] mikey@friendsofdesoto.social 1 points 3 days ago

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange @mikey@friendsofdesoto.social You don't deserve that. You've given as much spare time as you had. Now you can't.
