Only a few insects are known to have the ability to hear of which cicadas are included. However, from Brittanica:

Cicadas are noted for the intensity of sound produced by some species and for the elaborate development of the ears, which are located on the first segment of the abdomen.

Please adjust your torture method accordingly and continue...

Yeah. I've moved away from where I grew up and I miss the sound of the cicadas, weirdly enough. Summer just doesn't really feel like summer without the BREEEEEaaaREEEEEEEaaaREEEEE of the cicadas in all the trees.

They're annoying until you get used to them and then they just become part of the ambience.

North American Cicadas sound horrible. When I first came to NA from Europe, I thought it was because of the overhead transformers they put everywhere.
