Whenever I think of the Dylan Roof incident.

The death penalty isn't a punishment, who really learns from it, the criminal? It's a tool for society to remove what amounts to a defective person (not human, person). People are supposed to value the lives of other people by default. Any sustained deviation from this norm is a symptom of a person who cannot value life.

Dylan Roof was given 1000s of opportunities to demonstrate that he did actually value life but because of his defective nature there was no choose but to remove him.

"Life in prison" can be canceled/pardoned/changed, death cannot. That is why it's near impossible to make it happen and even if it does,, people spend the rest of their lives waiting for their "execution" (ftr Dylan is still alive at this time source).

Now in what possible world would you be able to convince a jury of random peers, or judges with their heads actually screwed on tight, that a sample size of one murder proves that a person is defective.

Genuine responses only:

It's because the wealthy run things, and the victim was wealthy.

Game, set and match.

The prosecutor claims that he endangered others around the victim. But if you watch the video you can tell he clearly was careful to not cause harm to anyone else. He could have bombed him, done a drive-by or any other method but he shot him with single shots at a close range. If they go for the death penalty he'll walk.

That corrupt piece of shit that dropped the trump University case for fifty bucks and a case of Boone's Farm wants the DoJ to pursue the death penalty for a homicide. Sure. Best timeline ever.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat noooooooooooo, that can't be right. Who other than every single person alive saw that coming?

Hopefully, they will televise it and trump will say "You're fired" right before they pull the switch. That would be on par with the shitshow circus we live in these days.

Edit: added to the bit

Higher burden of proof on a case that already has improperly collected evidence? Sure thing, go ahead and virtue signal to the right that you're still the party of law and order. The billionaires should still be scared after reading this.

It's my understanding that this will make it far more difficult for them to get a conviction/verdict. Going for the death penalty has certain bars to hit during a trial by jury. It's often why prosecutors go after lesser sentences on things people absolutely did the worse versions of. This gives them a much more likely guilty verdict from a jury.

By doing this, they're basically torpedoing the case, as I understand it.

Purely to try and scare people/send a message.

When he's rendered a verdict of not-guilty for the crimes that would lead to the death penalty, but is guilty of something relatively trivial, like "owning an unregistered firearm", this could come back to bite them in the ass.

But who knows. I've been hoping for the judicial system to bite the ass of fascists for almost a decade now, without much luck.

Remember nothing about this will be a fair trial. This is going to be the most cooked trial you've ever seen in your life. Jurors will be downright threatened if not bribed.
