Do you guys realize - if I get a speeding ticket or accidentally check a voting checkmark at the DMV - im may no longer be eligible for US citizenship.
fucking speeding ticket

You mean that thing that the police get to issue basically at-will to whomever they dislike?

[–] ilmagico@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Is that hypothetical or are you saying that right now, people are being denied us citizenship if they have a speeding ticket? Cause I was pretty sure anything minor like that pretty much wouldn't count, not sure if things have changed

[–] azimir@lemmy.ml 9 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Things have changed. One person lost a green card because they got a "too many fish" citation while not fishing, but being with a group of people who were fishing.

One student had their visa revoked by the US because they were the victim of domestic violence. It's batshit insane what they current administration is doing.

Good to know

The problem with this is on who exactly decides long term on which crimes qualify.

Once established it's simply a matter of extending the list of crimes to encompass whomever they want

Jaywalking is now a felony

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 14 points 13 hours ago

Jaywalking is a fake crime made up by car company lobbies to criminalize anything being on the road that isn't a car.

Bitch ass car peddlers trying to criminalize my natural way of moving...

The plans, hatched by Sweden’s rightwing government with support of its far-right backers, made waves around the world.

This one's a European homebrew.

Proof you need to thoroughly play test house rules before having a larger rollout.

I mean if you think about it all of human history has been A-B testing different societal feature sets in different regions.
