Jerusalem (AFP) – Israel on Sunday ordered the military to stop a humanitarian ship carrying activists, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, from breaking the blockade of the war-ravaged Gaza Strip.

"I have instructed the military to prevent the Madleen flotilla from reaching Gaza," Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a statement from his office.

Calling Thunberg an "antisemite" and the group of activists "Hamas propaganda mouthpieces", he added: "Turn back because you will not reach Gaza."

The Madleen, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, left Italy on June 1 with the aim of delivering aid and challenging the Israeli blockade, which has been in place for years even before the Israel-Hamas war since October 2023.

Organisers said Saturday the vessel had entered Egyptian waters and was nearing Gaza, where the war has entered its 21st month.

"Israel will not allow anyone to break the naval blockade of Gaza, which is aimed at preventing weapons from reaching Hamas -- a murderous terrorist group holding our hostages and committing war crimes," Katz said.

"Israel will act against any attempt to break the blockade or support terror groups -- by sea, air or land," he added.

I hate that he uses the word antisemitic

There is a lot of antisemitic rhetoric these days. A bunch of activists on a humanitarian mission to save lives is not part of it. Israel is not the victim here. They became the aggressor when they started the senseless killing

The western Palestinian movement has become a hate group, and isn't making any effort to mitigate anti-semitism within it's ranks. Only make excuses are you are doing.

This flotilla is an anti-Israel propaganda mission, it doesn't have anything to do with humanitarianism. Everyone, I mean everyone, knows Gaza is being blockaded and everyone knows there is no possibility of this ship actually getting to Gaza. One wonders if they even bothered to actually put food on the ship, because the point isn't actually to get food to Gaza. The point is entirely about pushing an anti-Israel narrative.

Israel is not the victim here.

Israel is not a single person. The Israelis being held hostage are certainly victims. Antisemitism in the west has reached a point where it's no longer safe to raise awareness that Hamas is still holding Israelis hostage, see the Boulder, CO attack. You're being told you should dehumanize all Israelis (along with anyone that even has empathy for Israelis) so you can believe a simple narrative where all Israelis are evil. Likely you're also being told that anyone that has empathy for Israelis being held hostage are evil (aka the "Zionist Jews"). You're probably just not to the point where you're believing all Jews are evil, but you might be willing to look the other way about the actions of those that do.

That's how antisemitism works. 100% of the population of Nazi Germany didn't hate Jews. They only needed to be made willing to look the other way and not ask too many questions while the Nazis were doing what they were doing.

You should be more willing to question the motives of the "Free Palestine" movement. "Free Palestine" were the words of a nutjob that tried to kill as many Jews he could simply because they had empathy for people being held hostage. What is the real goal of this movement? How are they trying to accomplish those goals?

You sure are using a lot of words to defend a genocide

FREE FREE PALESTINE!

according to zionists, Israel should attack the boat and block it because Hamas will immediately kidnap and torture Greta.

but also that Greta is working with hamas. and Israel is protecting Greta from Israel bombing it.

nothing makes sense

Do it, the world is watching, and will NEVER forgive you. Greta is braver than the entire IDF put together and all of us know that no matter what cowardly acts of terror the IDF brandishes.

If Israel hurts Greta they will lock their pariah state status in for decades.

Checkmate Israel.

That's the idea of the flotilla, I think.

I also think bibi doesn't give a fuck, and that ship is likely toast, and there likely won't be consequences for decades (if ever).

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (2 children)

There will be IMMEDIATE consequences, you are waayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off the mark here.

The entire world is watching.

... including military assets we have no idea about, any move now all world leaders will take note of.

[–] voracitude@lemmy.world 24 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The entire world has been watching the genocide in Gaza, and the unprovoked attacks on Syria, and the reckless violence which has killed so many foreign nationals, reporters, and aid workers, and what consequences to speak of yet? What evidence supports your position?

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I know, I understand that perspective and feel similarly a lot of the time but I see cracks now, I see them everywhere.

The most easiest piece of evidence is that Piers Morgan admitted to Mehdi Hasan on live tv that he was wrong about Gaza and that what Israel is doing is abhorrent. This is a MASSIVE shift for a VERY prominent UK news anchor that had pretty embarassingly been running interference for the Palestinian Genocide in UK media to keep the public there from turning against this awful destruction of humanity.

It is too late, nonetheless but I will take my victory with a fervor that is meant to honor the fact that it is already too late for so many.

[–] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 3 points 9 hours ago

Morgan then said to the doctor who have 9 of his children killed do you blame hamas

[–] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 2 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

You are very optimiatic. You will just here strong empty condemnation. The houthi may be the only one who will reply with actions

[–] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I think israel will escape accountability just like always unfortunatly. The flotilla should have been assisted by soldiers of the activists country

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

The leadership will face accountability eventually. It takes time but justice will catch up with them eventually.

The problem is that the delay will likely mean that the death toll will be even more massive than what it already is.

[–] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 1 points 2 hours ago

The leadership will face accountability eventually.  Only if Israel lose and is forced to end occupation. Just like Bush didn't face any accountability for his war crimes

[–] Eyekaytee@aussie.zone 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

If Israel hurts Greta they will lock their pariah state status in for decades.

LOL

What planet would you say you're living on right now? Surely not planet earth

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

Earth, I will tell you how I know that, the reason Greta is doing this is because Greta is angry as I am about my home.
