This is seriously dumb, but here we are. If that's true, I will happily delete it.

Youtube is doing a good job of making people either get an account or not use them.

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 8 points 2 days ago

Its amazing how quickly you realise that you don't need something when you're forced to stop using it.

Australia's got a law, and I'm dreading the day I need to give Google more information in order to keep using YouTube. Certain YouTube channels are really important to me.

[–] LemUrun@pawb.social -1 points 2 days ago

If they are this important, I don't blame you. I can do this sacrifice.

So I'm usually pretty well informed about these issues and did not understand OPs post. If you're like me and are curious what this is about, I think OP is referring this: https://identityweek.net/eu-age-verification-app-to-be-delivered-in-july/

From what I could gather, there is no mention of any specific site enforcing the use of this new tool at any specific date.

Feel free to correct me OP.

Without this app, you could have restricted functionality. So the EU is kinda forcing it.

[–] ISOmorph@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago

Like I said, nothing in this or any other article I could find during a quick search has any specifics where and when any restrictions are enacted. So no more cause for alarm than any other day.

It's possible to watch Youtube if you don't care about commenting, adult, or members only videos.

On Linux, I use Freetube. On Android, PipePipe.

I don't know, how this EU thing will look. But these are some options, yeah.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hasn't it been a thing for a while

[–] LemUrun@pawb.social 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Apparently this is new and starts on July 1st.

wait, did those fuckers pass something like this recently? and where are the news articles about it?

So it's a French thing, not an EU thing then?

European Commission alleges age verification systems are ineffective in preventing under-18s from watching ☞ https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/may/27/pornhub-three-other-adult-websites-eu-child-safety-investigation

“Today is a good day for minor protection online in the EU, because with the enforcement actions that we are launching … against four very large online platforms with pornographic, adult content, we are clearly showing that we mean it when it comes to the effective protection of minors under the DSA,” an EU official told reporters.

The platforms could resolve the investigation by producing forms of age verification deemed effective by EU regulators. But if the complaint is upheld they could be fined up to 6% of global annual turnover.

Been here in the UK for a bit

[–] Hirom@beehaw.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What makes you think this would only affect YouTube?

[–] LemUrun@pawb.social 0 points 2 days ago

It will affect all social media, excluding fediverse. So I'll move here "harder".
