Food insecurity

Iran from local problems.

[–] ObtuseDoorFrame@lemm.ee 47 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

Yup. And no one is talking about the theft of 250 million acres of public land, either. Netanyahu and Trump are both bombing Iran for political reasons and blaming it on nukes that probably don't exist.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 16 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

The public lands thing is breaking my heart. I hope they're used by Magas and they now can't use them anymore. The one in Washington State is definitely like that.

[–] ObtuseDoorFrame@lemm.ee 10 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

It's so sad! I can't stop crying about it. Hiking is my entire life. I live in Washington and looked at an interactive map of the land they're trying to sell. All of my favorite spots are in danger.

If you look at the map you'll see how stupid it is... they're cutting everything into tiny pieces so that even the land they don't sell will lose it's recreational value. The PCT will likely be completely ruined because of this. The way they're cutting it up... there's no logic to it. They're doing this to hurt us.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 7 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I hope it's like in Florida when they tried to do the same thing for golf courses and the public came in and shot it down. We have to get louder, Magas won't like this either.

[–] ObtuseDoorFrame@lemm.ee 6 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

I'm willing to stand in front of a bulldozer if it comes down to that.

The thing in Florida is encouraging, although that was at the State level rather than Federal. I'm sure there are organizations who are going to oppose this... if this happens it will be irreversible and will effectively ruin western states, and put a huge dent in local economies. This will also hurt the people who don't hike. People come to the western US from all over the world to use our public land.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 hours ago

People don't understand what's happening, there are a lot of people willing to stand in front of bulldozers. This is their technique:

“The opposition party is the media,” Steve Bannon, who helped run Trump’s 2016 campaign, told PBS Frontline five years ago. “And the media can only — because they’re dumb and they’re lazy — they can only focus on one thing at a time.”

So the solution, per Bannon? Overwhelm them.

“All we have to do is flood the zone,” he said. “Every day we hit them with three things. They’ll bite on one, and we’ll get all of our stuff done, bang, bang, bang. These guys will never — will never be able to recover. But we’ve got to start with muzzle velocity.”

The Republican strategy seems to be to get the public to resort to violence against them

[–] cyrano@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

what is the story about the public land? I missed that

[–] ObtuseDoorFrame@lemm.ee 8 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Here's an interactive map which shows the scale of the looting:

https://arcg.is/0yjyHy1

Here's an article that goes into the specifics a bit more:

https://grist.org/politics/public-land-sale-republican-senate-bill-mike-lee-trump/

They're selling public land (trying to, anyway) to the highest bidder, with no rules about how the land will be used. Expect private golf courses, Airbnbs, luxury summer homes, etc.

[–] match@pawb.social 3 points 5 hours ago

The buyers should expect "nonviolent" resistance.

Interesting. thanks for sharing

Is the implication that we shouldn't be upset about bombing Iran because they're also doing other awful things?

Whenever they do anything people seem so eager to claim that it's just a distraction from whatever it was that was just happening, which itself was also just a distraction.
I've seen literally everything mentioned hear described as a distraction meant to draw your attention from something else.

Maybe, just maybe , none of it's a distraction, they don't care what you care about or notice because it won't change what they do and they're just absolutely awful people working their way down their terrible agenda.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

I interpreted it as reinforcing that we need to pay attention to all the things on the list and not fall for the distraction.

they’re just absolutely awful people working their way down their terrible agenda.

  • Tariffs - destabilize foreign relations, isolate the US even more than it already is, reinforce American exceptionalism and xenophobia, personally profit off of market fluctuations
  • Elon / DOGE - solidify authoritarian and oligarchic control by ripping apart internal buearacratic barriers, placing spies and saboteurs in critical positions, dismantling key federal agencies, and preventing enforcement of any regulations against corporate interests.
  • ICE - reinforce xenophobia, incite civil unrest as justification for military oppression, use vulnerable populations as scapegoats for all of our economic problems
  • Universities - inhibit progress by destabilizing and occupying their greatest political threat. Youth without major responsibilities or jobs, and old retirees, are literally the two most powerful and vulnerable political forces in the world.
  • Gaza and Iran are literally the same thing - support Israel and the Military Industrial Complex. Spread hatred and fear as a means of reinforcing authoritarian control.

The budget bill, too. It's all fascism, all the time. These aren't distractions. These are all the same threat, and we need to band together and put an end to it.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 9 points 5 hours ago

None of it is a distraction, you are 100% correct. Steve Bannon called this "flooding the zone". When Fascism takes over, it hits hard.

The invasion of Netherlands is just a distraction from the invasion of Denmark.. which was really a distraction from the invasion of Poland!

This is how society sounds to me right now. I concur, these events are not distractions from each other, but additional fronts which must be fought and resisted. We need our eyes on all of it.

“WMDs, trust me bro”

I swear I’ve heard this before 🤔

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 hours ago

And here I was thinking it was just a bullshit crappy landlord phrase, but you're right, it signals his whole intent.

Wagging the dog for Israel's colonialist ambitions.
