Kobo is relying too heavily on 3rd parties for their software, such as Dropbox, Overdrive, Pocket, and Device Repairs. This is coming to haunt them.

Shorter article: "Look at Amazon's monopoly around Kindle, aren't monopolies so much more convenient?"

I guess they're going to complain about the fact that Kobo e-readers use regular microSD cards for onboard storage next, instead of soldering the chips directly to the board.

Well sure, that’s why we should all be using koreader (on every device not just Kobo)

How would koreader make my experience better on kindle (that I don’t connect to the internet and use entirely with calibre)?

Good question. I used my kindle in the same way, and I found Koreader was just more feature rich (and snappier). The dark mode I was missing was back and when I opened it, it went straight to my library instead of a dumb storefront. It might not be worth the effort if you are satisfied with your experience of a kindle in airplane mode with your calibre library on there, but I enjoy the features and the open source aspect.

(Edit: I forgot to mention that I now use a Kobo Clara color after my old oasis died)

Hm, may be worth a look. Thanks.

The is one reason I went with a Boox device instead. No reliance on pre-baked software.

Ever since I knew about boox I always wanted one. But I just couldn't decide if I want a small ereader, a bigger color one for manga (yes I know manga is black and white most of the time) or an e-notetaker. And price.

Yeah I took a pay off plan for the Go Color 7 Gen II. It was worth it for me even though I only just read regular books.
