There is a free timed research that seems to give one gigamax starter our of the new ones. These are a pretty huge power boost especially for accounts that haven't invested a lot in d-max related stuff.
I also believe that these guys will not get easily outclassed as attackers of their respective types in the future unless there are big changes to the max battle system itself (especially intellion & rillaboom). They'll be good to have and keep around even if you don't plan on doing max fights now. Definitely one of the more generous things Niantic has done.
