Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

How rich of you to think us Linux users have someone to talk to.

    [–] Australis13@fedia.io 28 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Some of us do, but you can see their eyes glaze over the moment you mention Linux...

    [–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Have you heard the good word of our Lord and savior....

    [–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

Good idea. When the Mormons come by, start talking to them about Linux. If they start reading scripture, you start reading man pages.

    [–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Dangerous move. What if they adopt Linux? You're then obliged to become Mormon.

    [–] peacepath@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This show the importance of licences ; if you request not only Linux but free licences, it makes it easier !

Accept to become mormon but if their scripture are provided under GNU GPL V3+, then you can hack them the way you want...

    [–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 8 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I don't think you can fork Mormonism.

    [–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

Tbf aren’t most Christian religions forks? Of original Catholicism, which itself is a fork of Judaism?

    [–] peacepath@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

They are different distros, and fork of distros, of a same original project. Yet it is sad to see how the trolls of the different branches are aggressive toward others.

Don't you think switching to Linux could help them in finding better ways to promote their favorite distro?

Yet, I admit linuxians too tend to have a favorite distro they fight for even if they haven't tried most others, and therefore without knowing if theirs is really better...

I have to use windows at my new job, and I hate it so much. Have I said that in the last few minutes?

    [–] squirrel@discuss.tchncs.de 32 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Thank god I got it out in time.

    Windows sucks balls.

    [–] jeena@piefed.jeena.net 37 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I will install arch soon on my host.

The arch linux experience (in the vm) is great so far. Just search if you need help, install corresponding software for something to work, etc.

I don’t even need to say it anymore. Every single time a coworker, friend, or family member expresses frustration with Windows in my vicinity, I just shoot them a snarky glance and they preemptively tell me to shut up. ❀️

    [–] peacepath@lemmy.world 29 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

open a terminal and enter the command:

    yes I am using Linux

    [–] StopA@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

U R using yes the wrong way.

I saw this, told my cats, and felt better

    [–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I feel worse because I don’t have cats and you do have cats. It’s a catastrophe.

    • step one: put food bowl out and refill it on a constant schedule
    • there is no step two

    Edit: listing is hard

    [–] HelloHotel@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Will I ever get to pet these "cats".

They can do the cat command. I may have moved a paw to help

    [–] ulterno@programming.dev 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No idea about the cats but it would be good if my mice were to switch to QMK.

    I use glorious Nixos.

This is not a recommendation. It is an abusive relationship. Do not install nixos without research.

    [–] BodilessGaze@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 weeks ago

NixOS is a dangerous drug, but at least it's a drug without side effects, since Nix is purely functional.

My brother jokes about this referring to me, but lately he has been noticing the power of Linux and FOSS, he switched to Lichess from Chess.com and immediately noticed the benefits and how the are totally worth the downsides.

He also noticed how quick my system is, and how cool is that I can hibernate my laptop.

I just hope my efforts make them all switch (at least their personal computers) to Linux at some point.

    [–] sykaster@feddit.nl 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (8 children)

I'm as much a Linux fan as you, but windows computers also hibernate without issue

top left pic is the same girl in the meme about the guy watching another girl while walking with her GF ?

    I'm using MX Linux BTW

    [–] Zen_Shinobi@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Hey guys, I use Linux Mint btw!

    [–] Jeremyward@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I been thinking about trying pop! OS, anyone got reviews?

    [–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Not as good as Mint for me

    [–] Sarcasmo220@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

For Arch users it's only 5 minutes. MX Linux users it's 3 1/2 minutes.

Edit: I actually meant to say NixOS users, but MX Linix users probably feel the same.

    Nobody brags about windows lmao

    [–] Australis13@fedia.io 7 points 2 weeks ago

    Not these days, at least.

I did go around telling people how much better 7 was over Vista at the time, though.

Holy crap maybe that's why I've been in such a trash mood for a few weeks

    Btw I don't use Arch

    [–] MelloniDev@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 weeks ago

    Been actively suffocating for 10min

    [–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 2 weeks ago

Isn't this mainly an Arch meme? I think most Linux users who have been using it for several years don't go around talking much about it anymore. But I admit the meme kinda does depict mid-teenage me who had recently switched to Linux.

    [–] cute_noker 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

    Akshually its called GNU/Linux πŸ€“

    [–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm still on Windows 10. Sure would love a reason to switch...

    You fucking fiends.

    [–] cute_noker 5 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

It's actually really easy, the best is to start with Linux From Scratch. That's how you get a couple of hours of heartwarming fun and games.

Start on your grandmother's PC she can join the fun

Switching to Linux desktop was last years news. Now I go around telling everyone about my Linux server (Debian BTW).

    [–] PyroNeurosis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

As a basic bitch Mint user, I like seeing the meme using women instead of the usual men! Didn't even know I wanted that.

I'm the opposite, I generally don't mention it because I know that I won't be able to keep myself from talking too much about it. If it's someone who's at my place and they ask what I'm using or I just see them looking confused about what's going on when I'm using it I'll gladly show them but never do the whole speech thing about why and why they should too etc.
