What made you think that? Just curious, I am not surprised.
What I heard about his autobiography was that he was comparing himself to all these high caliber actors and would rather have keanu reeves die instead of river phoenix.

For a period in the 90s, that would be like saying "why did Philip Seymour Hoffman have to die, why couldn't it be Gal Godot?"

He apparently came across as really self pitying, bragging, disrespectful to women, not owning his mistakes and resistant to changing himself.
From the thread someone else posted, it sounds like he thought of himself as an internal victim.
