The former Justice Department employee, who threw a sub at federal officers in Washington and came to be known as "Sandwich Guy," wasn't indicted on a federal felony charge.

You could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich, the saying goes, but, in Washington, a federal grand jury just declined to indict a man for throwing a salami sub.

The grand jury did not return an indictment against a former Justice Department employee who was seen on camera throwing a hoagie at the chest of one of the federal officers President Donald Trump has deployed in the nation’s capital, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The grand jury’s decision not to indict Sean Dunn is another sign of pushback from Washington, D.C., residents over Trump's deployment of the National Guard and other federal law enforcement agencies in the city, who have put a particular focus on immigration enforcement. The New York Times was first to report the news

He should have thrown multiple sandwiches so it'd be a submachine gun.

ATF would like to know if you have a license for that pun.

Our puns are baked fresh daily.

I mean, I can't believe it's even called into question, there was no danger to the officer from the action.

It's still assault, and in normal times I'd support minor charges. Currently, I'd like to buy the guy a new sandwich.

[–] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 17 points 5 days ago (2 children)

It may be assault, but only because assault is an extremely generic crime. It could also be considered self defense. At this point, many would consider ICE agents simply being nearby as an imminent threat of harm.

And IIRC from previous reports about this, the prosecution was pushing charges as a felony under a bullshit anti-terrorism clause, and I believe this was the third Grand Jury that chose not to indict.

[–] Tinidril@midwest.social 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

There is no "may". It is absolutely an assault. Assault doesn't even require physical contact. Battery is arguable and might be a stretch, but it is definitely assault. And no, or was not self defense by any stretch.

As I said though, that's normal times stuff. I don't currently recognize Trump's ICE as a legitimate law enforcement agency, or human beings really.

Yeah, calling it terrorism is bullshit, and actually could itself be considered terrorism in my opinion.

It may technically be assault but I’d challenge to you prove even the possibility of harm.

I’ll support your assault charges after we address larger issues. At this point half of ICE and most of the administration should be in jail. And Elon Muzak for election fraud

[–] Tinidril@midwest.social 2 points 5 days ago

My assault charges? I said it was assault, not that assault would be the right charge. What I said is minor charges.

I'm not sure why you think you have to tell me about ICE and the Trump presidency. I'm pretty sure I made my position on that clear. You aren't engaging in conversation or argument, you are ranting. Not that I don't get why.

"self defense" 😂

[–] baines@lemmy.cafe 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

how about two sammiches

git to make sure his deli weapon is properly stocked

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Does a hotdog still count under this? In England they throw milkshakes... In America you get the hoagie

[–] Nollij@sopuli.xyz 15 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Of course they didn't. It was only a submarine sandwich.

If it had been a ham sandwich, OTOH, things would be different.

[–] bobs_monkey@lemmy.zip -5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

They'd charge you with a hate crime if you threw a ham sandwich at a Muslim person

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

They may have charged him with a hate crime if he threw a ham sandwich at a police officer.

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

I wonder how much $$$ that's gonna cost us. It's probably in the mid-seven figures of our money for absolutely nothing.

[–] azimir@lemmy.ml 8 points 5 days ago

Instructions unclear. Grand Jury indicts salami sub, as the saying goes.

Trial is for next week. The judge is a fox commentator, the prosecutor a disbarred lawyer, and the witnesses all bounty hunters on the same payroll as the judge.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

Lol he was feeding the cops.

His real crime is not throwing a donut.

Dunn should start a GoFundMe to replace his sandwich.
