A-Am I supposed to use alt accounts on here? I've been telling people I'm a virgin who lives in parent's basement at 30 y/o.

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 month ago

I only do it to try out different software (lemmy/piefed/mbin) and to get around bugs with being a mod of a community on a different instance.

[–] Sasquatch@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

Woah you might my MY alt!

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago

That's fine - so long as you are also a wealthy married man in your 50s and a jobless widowed woman in her 40s :-P.

[–] viral.vegabond@piefed.social 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Am I a big old piece of shit if I do?

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean... you can get banned from those communities or even your instances involved for "voting manipulation" practices, so even if we might hope that one or two such cases would not trigger such a result, it is best to not do it.

Plus some actual big old pieces of shit humans actually do it on purpose... thereby attempting to exert undue (and unfair!) influence on the Threadiverse.

I know they are just fake Internet points, but some people get really worked up about this stuff... so personally speaking I avoid doing so like the plague. If it helps, think of it like stealing IRL - once or twice in your life you might walk out of a store after forgetting to pay for something, and it's too far to go back and pay for it later, but generally speaking nowhere close to a good or even neutral matter, as separately from what you think about it there's also the thoughts of the recipient to consider as well.

So, I agree and appreciate what you're saying. I was being a little facetious as well, if it wasn't obvious.

My opinion on the matter is that I don't really think it's noteworthy, so long as one isn't doing it intentionally. I am definitely aware that I do a multi-vote sometimes when I am using my alternate account(s), but my intent is not malicious. I just don't remember exactly if I voted on it already or not, and my mind puts it into some kind of morally ambiguous area.

My feelings are the same. Votes are reactions, like 😍 or 🍆. It's a federated universe where account creation cannot be controlled. Trying to make votes out to be more than a fun social reaction is ridiculous.

And yet, in other threads you can see admins bloviating about the sanctity of votes and how "vote manipulation" is scummy, etc. See, eg: https://lemmy.ca/post/50545875

I figured, but also wanted to answer it seriously in case doing so would help people know the answer legitimately as well.:-)

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

I'm getting deja vu here.

[–] FailBetter@crust.piefed.social 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What are the consequences for double-voting on most communities? I'm assuming intent doesn't affect the outcomes either?

[–] Sunshine@piefed.ca 4 points 1 month ago

You could get permanently banned from well known instances.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 4 points 1 month ago

It is against the Terms of Service of your instance, so you could in theory be banned outright.

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Gasp! You ARE Beaver!! ;-)

Hot Take: If you think for yourself and don't use the sorting methods that go by them, the votes don't even matter.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 2 points 1 month ago

A double vote means its appeal held up past one view.

[–] WhiteRabbit@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago

Too much brain power. Don’t worry about it.

[–] Albbi@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I haven't found any apps that handle Piefed on android, so I use piefed in browser and lemmy on mobile. The struggle to not double vote is real.

There are several though? Voyager, Interstellar, and I reportedly the next update of Thunder (the last one was June 26, 2025) will offer it. This is not a complete list, just what I recalled off the top of my head, but there should definitely be more than these.

@Albbi@lemmy.ca

There’s also Blurb, Summit, Mlem and Interstellar.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago

Thank you🤩

[–] Albbi@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ah you caught me. I use Thunder on mobile and have just been waiting for the Piefed support.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago

It is indeed coming - hopefully soon!

Well this makes me feel a little better about the extreme difficulty I've had creating new accounts on Lemmy. After all my attempts, this is the only account I have. Last time I tried circa November 2023, instances are stubborn to let anyone(?) in. Or is it just me 😢 I just want to establish a different username, my current username I pulled from my arse whilst panicking trying to escape reddit, but I'd prefer a different username that reflects my personality & I've put more thought into.
