Great. More expensive infrastructure investments to get passed onto the consumer through even higher ticket and concession prices at a time of record low disposable entertainment income resulting in theater gentrification. Just what the market needed

Okay, but the upgrade at my local theatre was so worth it. They sell burgers and booze. Waitresses deliver it to your seat. They have actual good recliners.

Makes for a phenomenal date night.

[–] falidorn@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That sounds like a detriment to me.

You live in a world full of choice. This is just one of them.

Still have blurry dim projectors. And $35 burgers don't taste that good.

Still have blurry dim projectors

Every single cinemy in my area has Barco flagship laser projectors

[–] atomicpoet@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

The only time I ever experienced blurry projectors was at a $5 discount theatre, and that was 15 years ago.

Do people still go to the theater regularly? I think I've been once since COVID lockdowns ended.

[–] Steve@communick.news 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I go probably twice every three weeks.
I love going to the movies.

I used to, but it just became so prohibitively expensive. $20 for a ticket, $15 for popcorn and a drink, not to mention driving to the theater and having to watch it when the theater decides to play it. I'd rather stay home and stream something instead.

$15 for popcorn and a drink,

You obviously have not been recently, prices have shot up.

[–] darkdemize@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

You're right, I haven't. It's more than that now?

I’d go more if movies weren’t always crap

[–] atomicpoet@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I go to the theatre for two reasons: big screen and dialogue you can actually hear.

A top of the line home theatre projector costs $5,000. And you have to replace the bulbs. If you want a good screen to beam it on, that sets you back $6,000.

Then there’s the dumpster fire that is sound. You can’t hear people talk. And I have a good 5.1 surround sound Sony system. But go to the theatre, that’s not a problem—you can actually hear dialogue.

Will I pay $20 for a good theatre experience? Hell, yeah.

You really can't put a price on listening to someone take a call mid movie and the gentle wafting of farts.

$11,000 for a home theatre? is is 1992?

Have you ever experienced a 4K ultra short throw projector beaming lasers at 150”?

It is amazing.

[–] BlackVenom@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Sounds like you should work on your equipment.

A decent LED screen is 1-1.5k for 70-85". After that OLED would be better than projector.

Sound wise... Something is wack or you're talking about piss poor quality streams or TV. Blu-ray, UHD BD, and good rips don't have this problem with even half decent sound bars, let alone 5.1 surround systems.

[–] atomicpoet@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

An LED screen almost never goes to 150”. But a projector can. Plus projectors are way more immersive than LEDs, especially in a dark room.

And you are right that Blu-Rays have better sound than Netflix. And I prefer them over streaming services. But a 4K UHD Blu-Ray costs $40 for a new release—and the sound still doesn’t compare to a legit theatre.

Theatre tickets costs $18 here. Not bad for something with better picture and sound.

Projectors are nice for extra large... I've never observed a good quality one irl outside of the theatre.

State side UHDs are often much less... Especially on sale. I've never spent $40 and have about 100 movies so far. New, old, criterion... Most I've spent was 25-30 on No Country day 1. Usually spend 10-15/disc.

My theatres blast volumes so high I get tinnitus for hours after, plus they are dimming the projectors and the focus is shit.

The first 30 minutes are fatasses grazing and slurping all around me, then the next 30 minutes is them all going to the bathroom after downing a half gallon of diabetes juice.

And then of course, on screen ads. Totally enshittified experience.

[–] jqubed@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I can’t remember going to anything besides Godzilla Minus One

[–] entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

I have a small indie-chain theater near me that I go to maybe 4-5 times a year. I also have a projector with a home theater room, so I'm a bit of an enthusiast.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Maybe if theatres played anything but Hollywood superhero crap I'd consider it.

I only see the point in a local rep cinema.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago

There are over 2,000 cinemas in the US. $750K each is not a lot.
