Explanation: After some three years of European powers brutally bludgeoning, bayoneting, machine-gunning, and using chemical weapons on each other in WW1, the Americans entered the war. We, of course, immediately indulged in the same bludgeoning, bayoneting, machine-gunning, and chemical weapons as every else did, but we also brought a large quantity of pump-action shotguns to the fight, with brutal effect in the tight confines of the trenches.

The German Empire lodged a formal complaint that the use of shotguns was against the laws of war due to the inhumane nature of the weapon. "Lol", said everyone else, "lmao"

Showing up late turned out to be a bit of a habit, eh?

To be fair, we were much earlier for WW2 than for WW1, and it looks like we're just going to go ahead and start WW3 ourselves!

Back when the rest of the world was like "C'mon America, do some war."

Would you have rather we showed up half-ass prepared? :)

Oberstabsfeldwebel, we've received a Telegram from the Yanks.

Oberstabsfeldwebel: Read it.

"Lol."

One of the craziest things I've learned about modern war.

"NOOOAW! You can't do that! INHUMANE!"

Funny note: Trench warfare, or fighting in a very small house, is the only use-case for a sawed off shotgun. Hilariously ineffective at 30', or maybe less.

  • No length of barrel for the powder to fully combust, slow pellets where speed is king.

  • Hard to aim a shorter weapon, especially in a hurry.

  • Shot fans out fast.

I have a derringer that shots 410 shotgun shells. Bird shot at 15' won't land a single tiny pellet on a poster-sized target. Same gun bounced a .45LC off a wooden pallet at 20'. I should throw it in the swamp. :(

Someday I'll take a bunch of shotguns to camp and post pics of the results of various barrels. Every inch makes a significant difference. My wife will back me up on that.

That would be fascinating!

Who is this "szechuan_sheridan" and why does he feel the need to watermark a meme?

I completely understand why people would mark their work in a world where some shitty corpo will take your idea and make a movie off it without giving you a dime.

You need the bayonet, you've got 6 rounds vs a dozen guys in a trench. At some point that's not gonna math, so you have to resort to dividing skulls.

I still remember the looks on everyone's faces when I demonstrated slam fire with the paintball gun I was using.

"No autofire!" they yelled. "Not auto." I replied.

Quoth the trench broom: chick chick boom.

[–] kalpol@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

Will there be enough room?

Seriously is there anything more American than a pump action shotgun with a bayonet lug?

I have loads of old shotguns, a couple older than this, but I'd love a Winchester Model 1897. Designed by John Browning, also famous for:

Browning's most successful designs include the M1911 pistol, the water-cooled M1917, the air-cooled M1919, and heavy M2 machine guns, the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, and the Browning Auto-5 – the first semi-automatic shotgun. Some of these arms are still manufactured, often with only minor changes in detail and cosmetics to those assembled by Browning or his licensees. The Browning-designed M1911 and Hi-Power are some of the most copied firearms in the world.

My 2022 Colt is the same gun as the original 1911, very minor changes, mostly cosmetic. Kinda like a Glock...

Yes, I'm one of those "TWO WORLD WARS!" 1911 nuts. Funny enough, Filipinos are 1911 nuts as well. It's a history thing. How about covering that Mr. Jesus?

Would if I could, but I know very little about the subject!
