WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration on Friday asked the Supreme Court to allow the deployment of National Guard troops in the Chicago area, escalating President Donald Trump’s conflict with Democratic governors over using the military on U.S. soil.

The emergency appeal to the high court came after a judge prevented, for at least two weeks, the deployment of Guard members from Illinois and Texas to assist immigration enforcement. A federal appeals court refused to put the judge’s order on hold.

The conservative-dominated court has handed Trump repeated victories in emergency appeals since he took office in January, after lower courts have ruled against him and often over the objection of the three liberal justices. The court has allowed Trump to ban transgender people from the military, claw back billions of dollars of congressionally approved federal spending, move aggressively against immigrants and fire the Senate-confirmed leaders of independent federal agencies,

In the dispute over the Guard, U.S. District Judge April Perry said she found no substantial evidence that a “danger of rebellion” is brewing in Illinois during Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Eleven people were arrested at a Friday protest outside a U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement facility in the west Chicago suburb of Broadview. Law enforcement had urged demonstrators to stay in designated “protest zones.”

Why don’t you just tell me the name of the right you would like to exercise

Is it "Amendment 1" you're trying to exercise? Why don't you just tell me the name of the right?

The president used to have to make his case to congress before starting a war with another sovereign nation. Not anymore. Everything now automatically qualifies as defensive/police action or some other phrase to mean that war is now just a regular part of how we keep ourselves secure. No need to ask if a particular one is justified.

Now the president is asking if he can use the military against the citizens of its own country. Something that should only be allowed in the most extreme cases. We're talking once in a lifetime events, once in a century. Rarer maybe. Maybe never. And after they give him the thumbs up, anything will become the justification for using the military on its own people. Just part of how we keep people safe.

We spend the overwhelming majority of our budget revenue on the military. When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Ill tell you what, I dont feel safe and secure. And doing this shit makes me feel less safe and secure.

Especially around voting time.

I agree with everything you just said, except about the budget. "Defense" (lol) accounts for less than 20% of the budget.

[–] lectricleopard@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

You know what, thank you. 46% of discretionary spending in 2024. Just looked it up.

[–] Supervisor194@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Explain how this is disingenuous though.

[–] imsufferableninja@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It's not disingenuous, it's wrong. The "overwhelming majority" of the budget goes to entitlements. Military spending isn't even the majority of discretionary spending.

None of these appeals have been emergencies. This seems to be abuse of power by both djt and scotus.

I can't wait for the lottery for the tickets to watch his sentence read aloud in person. I only hope he lives long enough to hear it.

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Is the President having SCOTUS on speed dial a new thing. I don't remember Biden, Obama, or Bush directly asking them for shit.

[–] lectricleopard@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago

Its part of consolidating power in the executive. Congress used to have to approve a lot and legislate. Now they dont pass any laws and the president and his cabinet make policy. They've been working on the Supreme Court too, trying to consolidate courts power in the executive as well. Not quite done yet, but most court decisions from the unqualified scum he appoints are just rubber stamps of "the executive has plenary power." There's a reason that word caught people's attention when Miller said it.

These emergency motions go to a single justice first. That justice then forwards the matter to the full court (usually).

In this case, Amy Coney Barrett ordered a quick opposition response to the government's motion, but she didn't put down an administrative stay right away, like in some of these other cases. This means that the NG deployment is still blocked while ACB collects the paperwork and presents it to the full court.
