Smoking the trump and pat robertson packs today 🥳🎉💃

[–] Powderhorn@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

The Trump news made me forget about Robertson. Overall good news day.

We've been hearing stuff like this forever now. I'll wait for him to actually be convicted.

[–] aster@beehaw.org 26 points 2 years ago

But we haven't, this is only the second time hes been indicted and these are federal charges. This is a first time in history that a former president has been federally indicted. It's quite a big deal over just investigations.

[–] Tavirez@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago

I mean I completely agree with you but I will gladly take him being indicted twice. That is substantial in itself.

[–] flying_gerbil@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Imo the best case scenario we can realistically hope for is for him to be convicted and placed on house arrest

[–] Fapper_McFapper@sopuli.xyz 21 points 2 years ago

My justice boner is so hard right now.

[–] Anissem@lemmy.ml 20 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Oh man I’ve been edging for years I’m so close

[–] Bumblefumble@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Give me that sweet release.

[–] DJDarren@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It'll be like Niagara Falls when it finally comes.

[–] Anissem@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

It was a spooky ghost!

Didn't he say that he was going to be arrested once before but it turned out to be a lie? Has this been confirmed yet?

[–] Limeade@beehaw.org 9 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

He was indicted and arrested in New York in early April, those charges are for falsifying business records relating to the hush money paid to Stormy Daniels. He lied about the day, but it happened a few days or a week after he said it would. The arrest process was that he showed up at court, pleaded not guilty, and was then released to await trial. No handcuffs, perp walk, or time spent in jail. That trial is scheduled to begin on March 25, 2024.

So far we have Trump plus "sources say" Trump has been indicted over the Mar-a-Lago documents in the news reports, but no officials have put out a statement yet that I have seen.

I used to worry about us over here in the UK being judged badly over Brexit, but you guys have, er, trumped us. This is fun to watch from 5000 miles away, but I'd hate to be there.

[–] Hart@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

I used to have a Swedish running partner (doing postdoc in California). We'd argue about who had the 'least well-informed' voters (not the specific word we used). He claimed Sweden, I claimed US. He was disabusing me of the impression that all Swedes were knowledgable and cosmopolitan. Ongoing friendly argument -- until McCain picked Palin as his VP candidate. I sent him a text: 'I win.'

[–] Geometric7792@kbin.social 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I can't be excited about consequences until there's a conviction

[–] balerion@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Even then, I expect him to get a slap on the wrist.

[–] CannaVet@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I expect even in the best case of him actually eating shit and going to prison in any useful capacity, we'll get a Democrat rollover and Biden will pardon him "to heal the nation" or some such feel good garbage statement in an attempt to placate the terrorist party that has only ever taken inches and ran for multiple miles.

[–] StewieTheThird@beehaw.org 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Just a bit more now I just need the perp walk and I can go peacefully into the night.

[–] Valliac@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

I'd love to see him hauled out in cuffs. Would just be icing on the cake.

[–] Wolfric82@beehaw.org 8 points 2 years ago

Those chickens are coming home to roost.

[–] FriendlyFusion@beehaw.org 8 points 2 years ago

Grab the popcorn 🍿

[–] Rocket@beehaw.org 7 points 2 years ago (2 children)

What does this mean for his presidential candidacy? Can he still run?

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago (2 children)

My understanding is yes, he can even run if convicted and in prison. https://prisoninsight.com/can-you-run-for-president-in-prison/

[–] alyaza@beehaw.org 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

My understanding is yes, he can even run if convicted and in prison.

most famously this happened with Eugene Debs, yeah

[–] ConstableJelly@beehaw.org 8 points 2 years ago

Breaks my heart to hear him mentioned in the same context as trump.

"While there is a lower class, I am in it, while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free..."

[–] DJDarren@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Ah, America and its freedom...

[–] Afkargh@beehaw.org 7 points 2 years ago

Oddly enough, he can run. But as far as I know, he would be ineligible to vote.

[–] feetongrass@beehaw.org 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I just hope this recording and any other proof they have are made public. Without that, he can continue calling this whole thing a witch-hunt.

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That's not going to stop him from calling it a witch hunt. The whole of humanity could witness his crimes with their own eyes and he would still claim he's being persecuted.

[–] feetongrass@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

That is true, but it would give the others in the party an out from having to support him in fear of his base.

[–] darkkite@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago (2 children)

thought he was going to drain the swamp? what happened?

[–] PrinceVarlin@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

c'mon, can't you see that the swamp is all empty?? ignore the alligators and mosquitos, please.

[–] communist@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

And that's not swamp water, it's mountain dew(tm)

[–] aster@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago

Hopefully it's like the rumored espionage act charges. Can't wait to read the indictment pages.

[–] HappyMeatbag@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago

I don’t trust anything a serial liar says, even if it’s something I’ve been expecting to hear. I’ll wait for news from a legitimate source.

[–] Admetus@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 years ago

I know more than anyone how to handle classified documents.
