This is one of my favorite movies ever. When I originally saw it in French with English subtitles I had no idea there was an English version of it. A year after I started dating my forever girl she found it playing at a movie theater nearby and took me to it as a surprise.

I have to say I was incredibly surprised that this movie was in the theater.

The English voice over is really well done, too! What a great movie.

This and Light Years live in the same little neighborhood in my brain, and I'm extremely fond of both.

I've never heard of light years. There are a few movies with that title. Got a link?

Sorry, that was the title of the English release of the film, and it stuck in my head that way. The film's original title is Gandahar, and the posters had a tag line "Led Années Lumière" ("The Light Years"), and that's what the American release used as a title.

You probably know it under the original title. If you by chance haven't seen it, I recommend the French version with English subtitles. While I think the dubbed version of Fantastic Planet is well done, the dubbed Gandahar is substantially different from the original release.
