One more step to unhitching from Google...

Right now the only option I see in F-Droid is Aegis.

I'm not sure what to actually look for side from checking for unexpected permissions and reasonably frequent updates.

Hopefully something I can sync with a GNOME app...

Second that. Mu daily driver now. It doesn't have every bell and whistle but by that same token it is refreshingly lightweight.

Late to the party, but:

A vessel may be defined as an object that keeps the water either in or out; it is the latter sort that concerns us.

The Elements of Seamanship by Roger C Taylor

Spun up a Home Assistant instance in KVM, getting dns error not found when trying to connect.

Probably because of how I set up my bridge, but It's been ages since I had any fluency with network config so it'll be a journey.

Hard agree! It fills a really specific use case, for ease of use, relatively simple projects (though like any simple tech, artists gonna art and make something massive lol).

Aurduor and the like (I jumped over to Reaper) are truly excellent options for more intense projects.

I didn't look into the "why" but I know there are blog or forum posts explaining it, I just didn't bother reading them

You know, this is an interesting point. I was a little frustrated to learn that .gov websites block VPNs (of they can detect them). But perhaps, practically, this is now more of an ad block feature rather than a bug.

Yah, I really like this approach. Same reason I set up Timeshift and Mint Backup on all the user machines in my house. For others rsync + cron is aces.

Oh my, it seems that may be so! Good job!

Not just that, it also devalues the information contained within as extortion leverage.

If everyone already knows, how's he gonna threaten Senator Perpetrator with exposure?

Edit: grammar

Not an expert, but is that potted plant a tropical by any chance?

I had something v similar if not the same pop up in a 5yo hot pepper plant. Turns out it was a sign of impending doom for that (and most any tropical) plant.

Check with a real botanist, but I would suggest re-potting it asap.

Neat! I may play around with this.

I recently picked up an older but perfectly adequate HP Z Book Firefly with a built-in smart card reader and I'm wondering what possible use is this little bit of tech? Can I, like, auth with my credit card or whatever? (mostly joking, I briefly looked at the PAM config for that and prefer my current hobbies lol)

... eating ice cream directly from the pint.

It always destroys spoons eventually, might as well use ones too sharp, too tinny, too light, the wrong shape, or with just the wrong bend in them already.

Edit: for all the head scratchers out there, it's a trait some of us neurodivergent folks have. Some forks or spoons or whatever are nice to hold, and some are actually upsetting to use.

I recently replaced an ancient laptop with a slightly less ancient one.

  • host for backups for three other machines
  • serve files I don't necessarily need on the new machine
  • relatively lightweight - "server" is ~15 years old
  • relatively simple - I'd rather not manage a dozen docker containers.
  • internal-facing
  • does NOT need to handle Android and friends. I can use sync-thing for that if I need to.

Left to my own devices I'd probably rsync for 90% of that, but I'd like to try something a little more pointy-clicky or at least transparent in my dotage.

Edit: Not SAMBA (I freaking hate trying to make that work)

Edit2: for the young'uns: NFS (linux "network filesystem")

Edit 3: LAN only. I may set up a VPN connection one day but it’s not currently a priority. (edited post to reflect questions)

Last Edit: thanks, friends, for this discussion! I think based on this I'll at least start with NFS + my existing backups system (Mint's thing, which is I think just a gui in front of rcync). May play w/ modern SAMBA if I have extra time.

Ill continue to read the replies though - some interesting ideas.
