My handwriting went from perfect block lettering (engineer/draftsman) to unintelligible scrawl when I learnt graffiti.

Sunk cost fallacy. They have already invested so much in fossil fuel infrastructure that they feel that if they give up now, they would have wasted all their money.
The fact that that the money is wasted whether they pivot to renewables or not something they consider. In fact, if they can lever their existing infrastructure they can be much more competitive than any new renewable energy provider.
This is a narrative created by the incumbent Fossil Fuel industry.
In reality, everyone is either directly or indirectly affected by the fires and everyone benefits from reducing climate change change.
The Renewable and related industries will be much better for the economy and capitalism.
The thing about Federation is that one server of a few hundred users can federate with all the other servers of a few hundred units and also other Federated services.
The next thing you know, you have a social network graph of millions of people, on thousands of servers (and not one ad).

Some totalitarian countries did ban Twitter and other social networks years ago as part of their subjugation of their citizens.

The best solution is DuckDuckGo. You can use DDG as your primary search engine and when it (or Bing, which is its backend) fails to find what you want, you can add “g!” to your search to look it up in Google.
What DDG needs to do is modify the G! switch to include “&udm=14”.

Second-to-last time we ran a sausage sizzle, we were brow-beaten by a Vegan who was upset that we were not offering Vegan sausages. His whole family was vegan and we were discriminating against them.
The next time, we got a separate grille, a separate chiller and a pack of twelve vegan sausages. He came with his family, and true to his word, he bought a vegan sausage for himself.
His family members all decided not to have their sausage straight away, but to come back afterwards.
They did come back later, without their father/husband and we threw out 11 vegan sausages at the end of the day.
