- Lemmy.world is not loading, and I am encountering an error when opening a new page.

Please start by checking the following links to see if Lemmy.world is experiencing any issues:

- I am experiencing an issue with the client I'm using.

Are you using a client other than the website itself? Is the issue specific to that client? If so, please contact the developer of the app or web client you are using.

Here are some popular apps/web clients you can reach out to:

- I am unable to create a community, and I keep seeing a spinning circle.

Please check if the desired community name is available.

- There is a community I want to moderate, but the moderators appear to be inactive.

Please email us at info@lemmy.world or create a post in this community.

- Did we defederate, or did someone else defederate from us?

Visit https://gui.fediseer.com/instances/detail/lemmy.world for information about defederation of any instance.

Alternatively check https://defed.xyz/ and enter "lemmy.world" to view a complete list of defederations.

- I cannot access my account.

For assistance with account access issues, please email us at info@lemmy.world. We cannot assist with these matters in the comments section due to privacy concerns.

- Why am I banned from this specific community?

Lemmy offers transparency, and you can check the modlog of the community to understand the reason behind the ban. If you have further questions, feel free to send a private message to one of the moderators. If you have other issues, please email us at info@lemmy.world.

- Can this feature be added to the website?

If you would like to request a feature to be added to Lemmy, please contact the Lemmy developers on GitHub or reach out to the developer of your preferred (web) client. Instances like ours cannot directly add features to the website.

The link to https://browse.feddit.de/ is dead and should be updated to https://lemmyverse.net/communities.

Personally i think it would even make sense to link this from the main site sidebar. Not because it is a problem finding communities on other instances from within world, at least this should be the best instance to be able to, but as a function of being a "role model" for other instances.

In my view as a long-time moderator, the purpose of moderation is conflict resolution and ensuring the sitewide rules are followed. As reported today by !vegan@lemmyworld, moderator Rooki's vision appears to be that their personal disagreement with someone else's position takes priority over the rules and is enough to remove comments in a community they don't moderate, remove its moderators for the comments, and effectively resort to hostile takeover by posting their own comment with an opposing view (archived here) and elevating it for visiblity.

The removed comments relate to vegan cat food. As seen in the modlog, Rooki removed a number of pretty balanced comments explaining that while there are problematic ways to feed cats vegan, if done properly, cats can live on vegan cat food. Though it is a controversial position even among vegans, there is scientific research supporting it, like this review from 2023 or the papers co-authored by professor Andrew Knight. These short videos could also work as a TL;DR of his knowledge on the matter. As noted on Wikipedia, some of the biggest animal advocacy organizations support the notion of vegan cat food, while others do not. Vegan pet food brands, including Ami, Evolution Diet, and Benevo have existed for years and are available throughout the world, clearly not prohibited by law in countries with laws against animal abuse.

To summarize, even if you don't agree with the position of vegan cat food being feasible, at the very least you have to acknowledge that the matter is not clear-cut. Moreover, there is no rule of lemmy.world that prohibits those types of conversations unless making a huge stretch to claim that it falls under violent content "promoting animal abuse" in the context of "excessive gore" and "dismemberment".

For the sake of the argument, even if we assume that the truth is fully on Rooki's side and discussions of vegan cat food is "being a troll and promoting killing pets", the sitewide rules would have to be updated to reflect this view, and create a dangerous precedent, enabling banning for making positive comments about junk food (killing yourself), being parents who smoke (killing your kids), being religious "because it's not scientific" and so on. Even reddit wouldn't go that far, and there are plenty of conversations on vegan cat food on reddit.

Given Rooki's behavior and that it has already resulted in forcing the vegan community out of lemmy.world and with more likely to follow, I believe the only right course of action is to remove them as a moderator to help restore the community's trust in the platform and reduce the likelihood of similar events in the future.

Hi :)

All mods on procycling@lemmy.world are inactive, and it'd be useful going forward if we could get an active mod. I'm on a different instance, obviously, but I don't mind doing it. If you'd rather make someone with an account on this instance mod that's fine and I'll ask if there are any volunteers.

Is that possible?

I did some looking up and there doesn't seem to be an option for it.

I found one I'd like to use with no posts at all, and the one mod hasn't had any Lemmy activity in 7 months or so. I PM'd him, but I'd be surprised if that message reaches him.

I'm trying to figure out why my comment was removed and it just so happens that the Auto Mod message isn't working as expected.

My issues are:

  1. The link to the comment does not work, it gives a "Server error." page and that's it.
  2. I can't submit a report because it gets stuck on a loading.
  3. What an unhelpful message from the mod. I need some answers.

This is the image attached to the only comment that I can't find in my comment history:

And, well, I do take offense that this is getting removed because I *wipes tears with a hamster* worked so hard to superimpose those words on it and crop it and save it. It was so sad, you guys. 😥

But joking aside, is there a way to submit a proper bug report to fix the link and button on the message so that I can get at these mods' homophobic wigs? I couldn't find a better place to post this, so any info would be much appreciated.

I'm pretty sure I don't have 0 posts and 0 comments on my Kbin account. This has been like this for several days now.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, if there’s a better location please let me know where to direct this.

One of the mods of !gaming@lemmy.world (Stormageddon47) left some disturbing comments here, referring to the simulated rape of a child in VR as “bullying” and insisting multiple times that it should not be investigated by police at all, despite sexual harassment of children obviously being a crime.

They repeatedly downplay the seriousness of what happened to the girl and spread misinformation about the police trying to prosecute it as a rape. While there are media stories referring to it this way, reliable sources are very explicit about the fact rape laws do not cover what happened to this girl.

Just wanted to make sure the admins knew this was going on, thanks for your time.

Hello the Lemmy.world team,

I'd like to know what are the plans to upgrade the instance to the new 0.19 versions. Was there a recent blog post or any discussion happening regarding the upgrade ?

I tried searching for some informations and could not find anything!

Is there anything blocking the upgrade or regressions that needs fixing ?

Thanks for your answers!

Have a great day !

Hi, I just want to be sure because it seems like the rules have changed about this topic and I don't see anywhere where it's explained clearly.

One month ago I posted a meme uploaded on ImgBB just fine. Today I did the same thing and my account has been immediately banned. I contacted the mods via mail and one person was kind enough to reply almost immediately and unban me, which is cool and you guys running the instance are awesome.

That being said, I'd like such an incident not to occur again. So, can I have a recommendation about image hosting sites that won't get me banned? Is Imgur safe? Catbox? Are there other alternatives? I'd rather not upload pics directly on lemmy.world servers.

Thanks in advance.

Lemmy.world seems to have a super short lifetime on whatever cookie they're using to persist a user session. I feel like sometimes it logs me out after 24 hours. Could we make this default to something more reasonable, or is there maybe a reason behind the short lifetime?

I've just taken over a community from the previous mod who has been inactive seven or so months. How do I remove them from the mod list? I don't see any options for doing so in the community screen.

Hello! I'm setting up a kbin instance, and while it's a little hard to tell thanks to the 0.19 breakage, it seems to be interoperating to some degree with most of the fediverse. I can post messages back and forth, at least.

With lemmy.world, though, it's not working. I get messages like this in the log:

Get fail: https://lemmy.world/comment/6458819, https://lemmy.world/comment/6458819
Bots Temporarily Blocked

And, indeed, it seems like lemmy.world is configured to reject connections from user-agents containing the word "bot". This is what happens when I access the same URL while manually setting user-agent to what kbin uses for client HTTP requests:

$ wget -nv --user-agent="kbinBot/0.1 (+https://my.domain/bot)" https://lemmy.world/comment/6458819
https://lemmy.world/comment/6458819:
2024-01-07 05:25:43 ERROR 412: Precondition Failed.

And, verifying that the word "bot" is the issue:

$ wget -nv --user-agent="kbinAgent/0.1 (+https://my.domain/agent)" https://lemmy.world/comment/6458819
2024-01-07 05:25:56 URL:https://lemmy.world/comment/6458819 [264000] -> "6458819.2" [1]

$ wget -nv https://lemmy.world/comment/6458819
2024-01-07 05:26:06 URL:https://lemmy.world/comment/6458819 [264006] -> "6458819.3" [1]

While I can understand that many bots are harmful so this is probably a necessary measure, it seems to me like this will break federation with all kbin instances (unless they figure out to change their user agent). No? Would it maybe be a good idea to add an exception to this for kbinBot? I may have misunderstood something, as I'm new to all this, just saying how it looks to me poking at it briefly.

Also, is it okay if I change my user-agent so that it doesn't contain the forbidden word? Presumably there's no administrative reason kbin and lemmy.world shouldn't talk.

I created this post on my local server, calling for what I thought was reasonable action against a self-proclaimed threat to Canada.

Someone in the community disagreed (fine), and reported the post on their hosting instance (lemmy.world), which led to an immediate deletion of the post (on that single instance only).

Think is, I really don't feel that it was warranted - and neither do most of the community members over on lemmy.ca.

I realize that instances are autonomous, but is there an appeal process to potentially have this reinstated?

18

I am intersted in some of their communities and i don't want to create duplicates. Not a fan of duplicates for niche comms especially.

I didn't have the impression that they were all that problematic when the defederation happened either, but i may have missed something of course.

I find it convenient and pretty cool that you can post to Lemmy from Mastodon by tagging the Lemmy community at the bottom of the Mastodon post.

I noticed a little over a month ago, this stopped working for me when I'd post from my fosstodon.org account and tag any community hosted on lemmy.world, and upon inspection, I see that Lemmy.world defederated from fosstodon.org

Threads.net isn't even defederated by lemmy.world, it's under the linked instances list, but fosstodon.org is blocked? What was the reasoning for that?

Hello,

Voyager iOS shows a blank comment while mobile Safari displays this:

Is anybody able to view these video comments on mobile?

Thanks!

UPDATE:

Per pict-rs Matrix:

Worth trying a configuration change? VP9 to VP8, if their hypothesis is correct.

I am a huge car enthusiast and I moderate several car related communities on Reddit, but ever since the blackout and one of Reddit's biggest mistakes, I've been moving to Lemmy and the Fediverse but I would really like to help moderate c/cars - !cars@lemmy.world

It's moderator although has been inactive for months, is the sub really lost or am I missing something that I haven't learned about yet? Anyway I can request the community?

!cars@lemmy.world

Hello Artists of Lemmy.

I am not sure if this is allowed here but I found nowhere else to post it in Lemmy. I didn't find anything in the side bar against text posts. If this is inappropriate then tell me to delete it.

I just created a new community on lemmy.world about the Middle East and I want to a design a banner for it. Unfortunately, I am not artist. I am not asking for free art for myself, rather art that would make my community looks better. If anyone is willing to volunteer to create a banner for this community, I will be very grateful.

Credits will be given in the subreddit side bar.

Here is the community link

I got a message from automod saying my posts had been removed for not being marked NSFW. I don't know which posts those could have possibly been, but it said that I could see the post at link, but every time I tried to click on the link it told me the post couldn't be found. What gives? How can I tell what the hell posts were removed?

24

Are there any other platforms, like Pixelfed or Peertube, hosted under the same umbrella as lemmy.world? I wasn't able to find anything referenced about this on lemmy.world, but perhaps that's just my newness to the defederated universe.

For whatever it's worth, I'd love to have multiple instances housed under the same roof. I lack the technical skills and time to set one up myself, and most of the ones I've looked at appear relatively deserted or poorly moderated.

!pokemon@lemmy.world was created 6 months ago, and has eight posts ... one of which is clickbait, but was never removed, as the sole mod hasn't done anything since creating the account. With a "popular" theme like Pokémon, it would be a waste to let such a community sink into oblivion.

If noone else wants to take over, I'd like to volunteer, but since I already mod a bunch of stuff, I'd like to give other interested users the first pick, and/or invite additional users to join the mod team.
