As a Californian, I would love for us to become Canada’s newest province.

[–] jownz@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago

Hmm.. CA, CA. 🤔

[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 2 points 11 hours ago

Alta California the newest and northernmost state of Mexico

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I wouldn't, as Canadian, because California would fully dominate such a union. It would be Canada joining California, not the reverse. Economically, politically, you'd be the biggest and most important province. I doubt you'll be happy being part of Confederation or being technically a monarchy.

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 3 points 8 hours ago

Conveniently, if any states were to join Canada, they would most likely do so as territories (at least initially), and so would be somewhat politically neutered.

It'd be half-and-half. That's being easy going with Quebec though, right? /s

[–] peregrin5@lemm.ee 23 points 1 day ago (6 children)

They don't want us. I already asked. But CA, OR, and WA can secede and make Cascadia minus the Canadian portion.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

I'd take California in a minute, please join us. We could use a little bit of sunshine.

You can leave behind your shitty governor though, I'll pass on that.

[–] tehn00bi@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Can you talk Texas into splitting up into multiple states to offset the loss of WA OR & CA?

[–] MariMini91@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

New England needs to consider leaving the US too. It's like we are in an abusive relationship now.

[–] assaultpotato@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago

I grew up in Vermont and I live in Canada now. Please don't make me go back, lol.

[–] Someone@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

As a resident of the Canadian portion of Cascadia I'd be in favour of a European style union of your former states and Canada. Unfortunately you're too big and too ~~American (for lack of a better term)~~ heavily armed [found it] to just let you in. Maybe we could handle Hawaii but I'm sure they'd probably rather be their own country than join us which is totally fair.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Nah. As a canukian, I'm down with it

[–] nokturne213@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago

Too bad Arizona is in the way, NM wants to join you at least parts of us do.

[–] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 5 points 1 day ago

As a Californian I would love that just so I never had to be counted in the same group as the south.

[–] kotg@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Hate to say it but imho trump would not let you leave. Is this something you guys are discussing with each other, I am genuinely interested.

[–] DaveyRocket@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Let? What, is he going to say it’s against the law? Who gives a shit what a felon thinks about rules and who can and can’t do what.

[–] Brodysseus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago

He's in charge of the most advsnced military that has ever existed.

If an economic powerhouse state like tx ca leaves, they'll be given surrender terms by the fed and systematically destroyed until the terms are met.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago (4 children)

It’s not up to Trump. The Constitution doesn’t let us leave. That doesn’t mean we can’t, it means we will immediately be at war with the US if we do.

[–] peregrin5@lemm.ee 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

Don't have to care about the US constitution if you're not part of the US anymore.

[–] pinheadednightmare@lemm.ee 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly, Cali is already at war with the US. The current administration is already talking about withholding all kinds of random shit for cali. That sounds like an attack to me.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmings.world 4 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Trump has already drained some reservoirs without consulting experts, plus ICE is on the prowl. California is going to feel serious pain come harvest season.

[–] pinheadednightmare@lemm.ee 2 points 17 hours ago

And when cali doesn’t pay federal taxes, the US treasury will feel it.

[–] Someone@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The way things are going , do you think the American constitution will mean anything by 2028?

[–] SabinStargem@lemmings.world 2 points 23 hours ago

Inspiration for a sequel. After Trump and friends are spending time at Mussolini's, we will need to make a whole new government. Having a blueprint for making a better Constitution will be helpful for making the rehabilitation process.

[–] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I will never forgive Lincoln for not telling the south to not let the door hit their asses on the way out.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmings.world 5 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

He died before he could see Reconstruction through, and his successor killed it.

Mind, Lincoln should have mass executed all significant leaders in the south. Offering mercy to those of a Nazi bearing always ends up damaging society. Better to put them down, rather than letting the infection fester.

[–] InvertedParallax@lemm.ee 1 points 16 hours ago

Agreed, which is why we don't have as many nazis in Germany anymore.

[–] FreeRangeMustard@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago

It would suit you so much. You’re the best state. I love California.
