At least Nero still did the whole bread and circuses act and was mostly liked by the public.

He’s much more of a later Roman emperor who stopped giving a shit about the bread and circuses idea.

You mean to say that Facebook isn't the main distraction of the -10s? Before Facebook it was TV that was the circus and low prices and no/hidden VAT provided the bread.
