The article makes it sound like the issue wasn't the connection to slaves: that was expected. It sounds like the original plan was to offer reparations to the descendants, but there turned out to be so many the finance department of Harvard completely freaked out.
Did whomever started this project not understand that Harvard was founded in 1636, and the average birth rate was greater than 5 until the 20th century, so they were looking at many thousands of descendants at a bare minimum?
Perhaps they should have gone to Stanford?
