If democracy is by the people, of the people, for the people; and if people deserve the government they elect, what does that say about the people?
It's fun to rag on USians, but their "democracy" hasn't been by or for the people for a long time. An exhaustive 2014 study by Princeton academics found that
"Multivariate analysis indicates that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy, while average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence."
