People seem to have forgotten that the core conceit of George Orwell's 1984 isn't the surveillance state or the constant war or the two minutes hate and all the rest. It's the idea that by perverting what people even understand as truth you can get them to do anything.
Anti-fascists are Fascists, criticising someone who spouted hate speech is hate speech, anti-racism is racist.

More charitably we can say half the population trusts their tribal influencers to know what they are doing.

This really feels like a polite way of trying to both sides that people who are bigoted assholes are exactly the same as people who dislike bigoted assholes.
I disagree, i don't think the person above is saying both sides are the same in terms of policy. But that both sides are being looked at as smart, impactful leaders that know how to play the game of politics.
Moderate liberals have elected people that they consider to be smart moderate liberals and they trust them to do the right thing. But a moderate liberal solution to actual fascists taking over the government is not an appropriate response. Just ask the social Democrats of the Weimar Republic.
