I was once stuck on a train near Donner pass for 6 or 8 hours. The train had a whole car that had been booked by a girlscout group, so I got to spend a chunk of that time listening to a few tweens debate what order to eat everyone in.

The Donner Party was definitely common knowledge among kids in the 90s.

The South Park guys did a musical loosely based on that called Cannibal the Musical.

Cannibal the Musical was based on Alfred Packer, not the Donner Party. Much later and different circumstances.
