Crews in Washington, D.C. have begun painting over the city's "Black Lives Matter" street mural, a notable symbol of the 2020 protests against the killing of George Floyd, after a Republican bill targeting the mural threatened city funding.

The phrase "Black Lives Matter" had been painted in June 2020 on the pavement by the city in uppercase, yellow letters, covering two blocks on 16th Street, about a quarter mile from the White House.

Look the government just doesn’t have any money. None for usaid, none for Ukraine, none for science or education or healthcare, there’s just no money.

Except I guess for performative bullshit like painting over this mural.

We also have the budget to fund ethnic cleaning of Gaza and reconstruction enough to hand it over to luxury real estate developera.

Also the budget to have a sovereign wealth fund that suspiciously looks like it is set up to let Elon use it to buy TikTok using taxpayer dollars.

We can find quite a bit of money by doing away with pesky things like social security. Think how much money are could have if we just euthanized people at retirement age.

Can we make it cool like Carousel?

Somebody is gonna win a Pulitzer with their pictures of this.

The Republicans are nothing if not petty little babies.

Trump is inciting riots so he can use it as an excuse for Martial Law.

So I'm neither Black or American, but this is just so profoundly sad for me. It was a symbol of people coming together, a symbol of American people still knowing how to fight for their rights.

It's as if they tore down the Statue of Liberty, in ways worse because BLM was a grassroots thing instead of a state gift.

Sure would be a shame if people went out at night and fixed it.

Would be amazing to have happen but they’re trying to start shit at this point.

They need a response they can escalate.

Since it's additional paint, it'd be easier to just hose the whole thing down so either they can't paint it or the paint doesn't stick.

You can repaint it when Trump and the oligarchs are awaiting their fate in Guantanamo Bay.

Guess black lives don’t matter anymore

[–] CobraChicken3000@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Should have just changed Black for White. That way they can save on paint and literally have the same effect.

Picturing painting strike through and then white above it.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

You couldn’t pay me to paint over it. I’d rather quit or be fired.
