Yup. Hard agree. A government shutdown should actually make it meaningfully more difficult for them to use the government to tear itself apart.

My worry is musk and his merry band of malcontents are probably excited about the prospect of a showdown because then there won't be anyone around to interfere or watch what they're doing.

It seemed to me that pausing as much of a fascist takeover as we can would be a good thing. Why continue the takeover if the services shutdown effects are going to be cut permanently?

[–] randon31415@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Would a shutdown slow down or speed up the fascist takeover?

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Fascists still need an administration.

At the very least to coordinate and pay the people with guns. But to pay the people with guns you need people collecting taxes. So you need tax administration. And in order to have taxes to collect, you need a functioning economy, so you need infrastructure like roads. So now you need an office where roads are planned built and maintained. And you want electricity, but grid is complicated, so you need an office for that. Also your underlings still need to eat, so you need to organize agriculture and transportation of food...

It all boils down to needing a reasonably staffed administration. So yes, a full shutdown will slow down the takeover.

Right but is DOGE going to stop working? Are they a government agency?

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I dont know what legal role Doge has. But if the office where they want to influence things is shut down, doors locked and nobody to answer the telephone, they wont have much to work with.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

They have the wealthiest man in the world, he could easily bankroll them.

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 1 points 13 hours ago

I am not talking about the office of doge. I am talking of all the offices where they want to meddle. They cant meddle if noone is there to open up for them, give them access to things or receive their demands and forwards their decisions.

Hey now if it happens Trump can say he slashed the budget!

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 50 points 1 day ago

Oh now democrats are definitely gonna cave.

Hold on, hold on. Before we rush to judge, let’s hear what Debbie Wasserman Schultz has to say.

[–] JohnScig@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We should definitely also ask Liz Cheney and at least a half-dozen former Republican strategists. You'll find them on Fox News with Elon's dick in their mouths.

[–] Auk@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

It must be difficult to spew bullshit with a mouthful of dick, even if alleged dick is 🫛 pea-wee.
