Early last week it was ~600 registered users, then last Friday ~700-800, 5 hours ago it was ~2.8k and now its 3.1k

Update: It has come to my attention that Lemmy is under a spam user registration attack. Feddit.uk is not the only instance affected.

Side note: Starting to notice some instance server load issues here. Not as snappy as it was due to the influx of new spam users.

Update 20th June: Tom has now enabled captcha and email verification on feddit.uk

Don’t forget to check the sidebar out on the feddit.uk homepage and donate to @tom@feddit.uk to assist with server upkeep and hopefully more server resource.

As an aside, do we have any idea about how expensive it is to host a Lemmy, and therefore what kind of donations are appropriate? I realise that's a difficult question since we're seeing a really massive increase in popularity at the moment, but are we talking a recurring pound-a-month / ten quid a year / @tom will pin a donations thread when the bills are due, or what?

I've enabled captcha for the login and I've added email verification. This does mean I had to update each of the current users as verified emails however, as otherwise no one would be able to log in.

I’ve just tried to sign up for an account and it said it has sent a verification email to me but nothing has arrived or in junk. Should this be an instant thing or are you having to manually do this? Cheers!

I don't know about anyone else but I'm loving the growth in communities, it's like seeing an old friend when one turns up that you used to love!

Like, oh hey, late stage capitalism got here!
