The US airstrikes on Iran, a timeline of tonight, all times are in Tehran time-zone:

  • Pre 1am: Israeli drones activated air defenses in several Iranian regions.
  • 1:14am: Fighter jets were heard over Shiraz.
  • 1:22am: Several aircraft were heard over central Iran.
  • 2:04am: Two jets [bombers] and an explosion were heard near Qom. Qom's countryside is the site of Fordow.
  • 2:13am: An explosion was heard near Kashan, another city near Fordow.
  • 2:38am: An explosion was heard at Fordow, but it was assumed a drone was intercepted. Which has now proven wrong.
  • 2:41am: A loud explosion was heard at Isfahan's Atomic Energy Facility.
  • 2:46am: An explosion was heard at Natanz Nuclear Facility.
  • 2:55am: GPS jamming was observed across Iran.

Reminder this only happened because Trump tore up the original deal and Iran was pissed. He had no negotiating position to make a new one because why would Iran agree when you didn't follow the old one. The cope about it not being approved by congress doesn't make it illegal. Since when does maga care about that ? Trump has defied judges several times now.

Second wasn't a big thing Maga roared about was that Trump was anti war ?

So my guess is that the Republicans who signed on to the "bipartisan" bill preventing Trump from taking action against Iran are suddenly going to have a whole lot of nothing to say......

so funny thing

Israel asked Bush to strike Iran's nuclear program. Bush refused

They asked him again to strike Syria's program

He refused again.

[–] wavebeam@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Are we fucking cooked? Is this going to start a series of retaliatory strikes that brings about the use of nukes? This shit fucking sucks.

[–] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yes.

He's deliberately placed the Nimitz, an obsolete and comparatively low-tech vessel, in reach of Iranian attack submarines. That will be the new Gulf of Tonkin. There will be a draft, and the use of tactical nuclear weapons is inevitable.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Bro a single Nimitz has more ciws than most navies and you know a literal air force, they're old they are by no means obsolete countries would literally kill to take one whole.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

US carrier groups have proven vulnerable to diesel-electric subs every time they come up to the nordics for an exercise. You can't hit a sub with CIWS, only torpedoes and that's if you know where they are.

Nordic navies have scored consistent simulated hits against US carrier groups from subs.

Their main defence against this is to stay the fuck away and use jets from afar. Which, if what is said above is true, they are not doing.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Let's hear again how many diesel subs iran has and how many destroyers we have? How many in a battle group? Oh for that matter how many subs are in a battle group?

Nords have and have had an incredibly powerful navy for most of their history, Iran not so much.

They can't strike willy nilly, you'd be baffled at how close Russians do fly bys.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Iran has at least 25 diesel subs in the specific area, as it is a state secret how many of their midget subs specifically designed for duty in the straits have been commissioned. 20 are verified.

The US has ~80 destroyers around the world.

But the subs are most likely laying mines right now, none of them have been sunk or even found as far as we know. Of course, demining is possible, but it's long and expensive.

Add to that that US brass was saying they would lose a sea battle against Iran in the straits 20 years ago. Iran has been commissioning 2-4 subs per year since.

And Iran does not want to fight US battle groups, they want to prevent cargo traffic. The US just lost the same battle off Yemen a few months ago, against a country with no navy.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Dunno where you're getting that the best guess and most common is around 20 total subs. Most of which we likely know the location of.

73 active with another ~60 in the ghost fleets but depending on the cvbg two destroyers, two sub hunters, a unknown number of attack subs that are essentially always in the area talking enemy subs and another 2 attack subs that are know known to trail cvbgs when they enter contested areas.

We don't need to enter anywhere Iran mines, last time someone tried this dumb shit 48 hours later the third or 5th largest Navy in the world was sunk.

No one said they're entering the straits.

Correct, that's not the argument you made though. You said they were obsolete, they are not. Most navies have exactly zero carriers and even the ones we decommission would be a boone for any Navy that could support it which honestly is not that many navies.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So has that happened yet? The blockade is already on

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Has what happened yet? What are you talking about?

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Has the US, seeing that it is at war with Iran, found and sunk these subs? Because they sure as hell closed the straits off and tankers are diverting already

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Cool we produce more oil than we sell so who cares. Similarly how is that at all related to the one point I had which is that carriers may be old compared to the rest of our Navy but they aren't in fact obsolete.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Will your domestic production keep selling at the price point you are at now once global prices skyrocket? Will Trump institute a "commie" price cap? Or will we just have another wave of "unprecendented inflation" and price gouging on all levels of the supply chain, with a side of even more layoffs?

And I didn't say "obsolete", I said "vulnerable". As in it's not a panacea, those weapons can be misused hard enough that the US Navy lost two jets against Houthi rebels without a navy just by being stupid.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not "rooting for Iran" here. I'm saying we're going to get fucked up again because Israel can't stop starting wars and genociding people.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Try harder trollio, at the very least pay attention to what you're arguing if you choose to take up someone else's argument on their behalf.

He's deliberately placed the Nimitz, an obsolete and comparatively low-tech vessel, in reach of Iranian attack submarines. That will be the new Gulf of Tonkin. There will be a draft, and the use of tactical nuclear weapons is inevitable.

[–] sekxpistol@feddit.uk 0 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Earlier today and yesterday, people in this community were saying that Iran doesn't have nukes, isn't making nukes, can't make nukes, and that republicans are just making it up.
