Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Many phrases for defecating use the word "take". It makes no sense to me

So what do you think happens to all the shit you leave around? Someone's gotta take it.

Sure. But it's not you.

Wait... is... is it you?

[–] Jollyllama@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

I once told a version of this at a stand up open mic, it did very well.

[–] mitrosus@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 11 hours ago

English is the shit we keep taking

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 10 points 13 hours ago

"I'm going to take a shit."

"Well don't take any of mine! I'm saving those for later!"

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 8 hours ago

if its BROWN let it mellow.

[–] UnculturedSwine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 10 hours ago

It's like having a nice lunch. Take can often just mean do like 'take a break'

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Shit as a verb, not a noun.

[–] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip 4 points 12 hours ago

That's the bizarre thing about English. Maybe native English speakers don't really think about it, but as someone looking at this mess from the outside, I can tell you that it's really nice when verbs and nouns are distinct.

We don't have to take any shit from you here.

[–] I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)
[–] AmosBurton_ThatGuy@lemmy.ca 2 points 12 hours ago

Does your shit have glitter in it?

[–] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip 6 points 21 hours ago

Same here. I just abandon it instead of taking, giving or whatever it is that some people do.

Chinese people say pull a poop, and I think that's beautiful.

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 11 hours ago

Oooo new debate: push vs pull

[–] Devadander@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago

Reminds me of the ASL sign for it

[–] subignition@fedia.io 35 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Take ~= have ~= do

Take a break == have a break, but a break isn't a tangible thing, so this is shorthand for "do the actions required to constitute a break"

[–] null@lemmy.nullspace.lol 8 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I don't want to have a shit, either -- I'm trying to get rid of the dang thing!

[–] subignition@fedia.io 1 points 10 hours ago

Then this is one verb you should definitely not noun

[–] mental_block@lemmy.wtf 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I see that.. but I would argue breaks can be given. Therefore one can take a break.

Break being almost a non continuation of something. There are two beings involved. And as you point out, you can also perform action consume a break.

Taking a poop is slightly different because one is giving an offering. Although one can consume poop too but I guess it's a different frame.

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Tons of people give a shit tho

[–] mental_block@lemmy.wtf 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Correct, but a different context than OP's framing.

Some leave a shit, some give a shit. Can you give a shit by giving a shit? Hmm. Possible maybe under special circumstances.

Don't mind me, these are poopy thoughts.

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 3 points 16 hours ago

I'm just giving you shit

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 7 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

You've never "taken a break" or "taken a time-out" or "taken a nap"?

It's not like "taking a X" is a foreign construct.

[–] lauha@lemmy.world 12 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I take a break, a nap and a time out because Inwant those things for myself. I don't want shit.

I'm just going to pray this was sarcastic

[–] FuckFascism@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Wait... you mean I don't have to shove my dog's shit up my ass?!

[–] squaresinger@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

That is what every dog owner should be forced to do who doesn't clean up their dog's shit.

[–] actionjbone@sh.itjust.works 10 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Someone here has never cleaned out a litterbox.

Beavis, referring to Andy Rooney on Sixty Minutes: “and another thing. Why do they call it taking a dump? I’m not taking it anywhere!”

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I'm going to have a shit. Which doesn't sound quite right either when you look at it that way.

[–] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 4 points 19 hours ago

At least in New Zealand that usage would not be that uncommon
